Notes:

Patty, a common nickname for Martha, appears in the census and most other records as Martha. According to records of her cousin-in-law, Polly (Converse) Wheelock, she was born 27 Jan 1789, in constrast to the 27 Jan 1790 date recorded in Spencer. The 1789 birth date is consistent with the 1850 U.S. and 1855 N.Y census.

Martha does not appear in the 1865 N.Y. census, suggesting she died before the census was taken. Yet Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, NY, 1788-1890 states that she died at age 76 years, which would be consistent with a 1789 birth date.

Joseph Thompson was probably born in Spencer, Worcester Co, MA. He moved (with his brother Moses) to Aurora, Erie Co, NY before 1820. Both he and his brother are enumerated in the 1820 through 1865 census records, living with their respective families, in the village of East Aurora.

Joseph, age 67, born Massachusetts, farmer, was living in Aurora in 1850, with his wife Martha, 61, also born in Mass., with their presumed children, Adaline, 32, and Philinda C, 15, both born in New York.

In 1855 Joseph and Martha were living in Aurora with their grandchild, Emeline Goodman, age 2, born in Erie County.

In 1860 Joseph and Martha were again in Aurora with their presumed daughter, Sarah Goodman, age 44, born in New York.

In 1865 Martha is not found in the census, but Joseph, age 83, born Mass., was living in the household of his nephew, Joseph Thompson, Jr, aged 54, born Oneida County, and his wife, Lydia A. Thompson, age 40, born in Erie County.

Joseph is found in no further census records. No death, probate, or burial record has been found.

His cousin, Mary "Polly" (Converse) Wheelock kept family records which showed the following children in this family (no dates): Albert A., Perry, Sally, Adaline, Mary Jemima, Aurelia, Joseph Bemis, Susan Bemis died aged 17 years, Sylvanus, Fernando Cortez, all surname Thompson.¹

The same children are listed in the Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, N.Y.²

Based on census records, it would appear that Sally married ____ Goodman. There is a Philena C. in the 1850 census, age 15, not mentioned in Polly's records.

Moses Thompson was probably born in Spencer, Worcester Co, MA. He moved (with his brother Joseph) to Aurora, Erie Co, NY before 1820. Both he and his brother are enumerated in the 1820 through 1865 census records, living with their respective families, in the village of East Aurora. Per 1865 New York state census, he was a widow, married only once, and was the father of eleven children.

His estate papers in Erie County, New York, dated 2 Nov 1876, identify the following heirs at law and next of kin: Moses Thompson, Jr. of Aurora, NY; Lathrop C R Thompson of Buffalo, NY, Caroline Palmer of Goldfield, Wright Co, Iowa; Dewitt Clinton Thompson of Aurora; Milo Thompson of Aurora; and Miles R. Thompson of Aurora, and his children, all of full age. No widow or minor age children are named.¹
