Notes:
He was the son of Micah Ross, per Charles C. Chapman, History of Pike County, Illinois (Chicago: Chas. C. Chapman, 1880), p. 697, at Archive.org, which identifies Micah Ross as the father of William, John's brother. Also, see annotations at the FindAGrave memorial for Micah, no. 37479669.
He died intestate. Dorothy Ross, his widow, forfeited her right to administor his estate, and requested that Henry J. Ross [John's brother] be appointed administrator. The appraisal included "an account against Dexter Wheelock [Dorothy's brother]," and a "balance due from Leonard Ross [John's brother]." Property of John Ross was sold 3 Mar 1832; many items were sold to Dorothy Ross, Mary E. Ross, and Betsey M. Ross. After all settlements, the estate of John Ross amounted to $1469, and was split three ways between his widow, Dorothy Ross, his daughter, Mary E. Ross, and his daughter, Betsey M. Gay (date of settlement not stated, but must have been after Elizabeth M. Ross married Stephen Gay).1
