Zedekiah Drury was born in Framingham, a cousin of Rachel Drury whose marriage to Asa Wheelock is recorded in Charlton. He moved to Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, prior to 20 July 1738 when Zedekiah Drury "of Sutton" married Hannah Axtell in neighboring Grafton, daughter of Thomas Axtell and Sarah Barker.¹

On 14 Mar 1738/9 he was a blacksmith "of Sutton" when he purchased 36 acres with dwelling house in Bedford, Middlesex Co, MA.²

He had moved to Bedford by 31 Dec 1739, when the birth of his first child, Gershom, was recorded there. His first wife died shortly after the birth of Gershom. He married his second wife, Hannah Wooley, on 2 Apr 1741 in Bedford. She was the daughter of Thomas Woolley and Mary Chamberlain.³

By 25 March 1743, Zedekiah Drury had moved to Dunstable, New Hampshire. On that date, Zedekiah Drury, blacksmith, “of a place called Dunstable in the Province of New Hampshire” sold his Bedford land holdings.⁴ Dunstable was dissolved into several towns in New Hampshire, including Hollis, which received it’s charter in 1746.⁵ By 1745, Zedekiah Drury referred to himself as “of Hollis” in his land sales, and continued to do so until 1769, when he began to refer to himself as “of Temple.”⁶ The 1775 census of Temple lists Captain Zedekiah Drury, Zedekiah Drury, Jr., and Gershom Drury - confirming the residence of the Bedford Zedekiah Drury and his family in Temple. His death dated is often given as 1777 [see, for example, Spaulding, An Account of some Early Settlers of West Dunstable, Hollis, and Monson, N.H. (Nashua, New Hampshire: Telegraph Press, 1915), p. 33.] But a Hillsborough County, New Hampshire deed, dated 13 Sep 1790, proves otherwise. In this deed, Zedekiah Drury "of Temple" and his wife Hannah sold all their "right title interest and claim" to a parcel of land in Temple.⁷

A death record has not been found for Zedekiah. His wife Hannah has a rough gravestone in the Temple Village Cemetery, but no gravestone has been found for Zedekiah.

To show that the Zedekiah Drury of Temple was the same man born in Framingham, consider the following:

Zedekiah Drury of Framingham had a brother, Daniel, who inherited property in Shrewsbury, Worcester Co, MA, from his father, Caleb Drury.⁸

Land, probate, and vital records show that the Zedekiah Drury of Temple had close connections with Daniel Drury of Shrewsbury, consistent with a sibling relationship between the two. This implies that the Zedekiah of Temple was almost certainly the same Zedekiah born in Framingham. The connections are:

(1) Zedekiah's son, Gershom, married Daniel's daughter, Sibilah, in Shrewsbury.⁹

(2) Zedekiah's son, Thomas, and Daniel's son, Daniel, Jr., married sisters, daughters of Abraham and Martha Knowlton, of Shrewsbury.¹⁰

(3) Daniel, Jr. moved from Shrewsbury to Temple, and for six pounds bought forty acres from the tax collectors there, one of whom was Zedekiah.¹¹ After Daniel's death, Zedekiah sold 65 acres in Temple to Daniel's heirs for twelve pounds.¹²

The mother of Zedekiah Drury, Jr. is often identified as Hannah Flagg of Woburn. This claim is made by J. H. Temple, The History of Framingham, published 1887, where it states that Hannah Flagg was "prob. daug. of Ebenezer of Woburn." This misinformation probably came from Edwin Drury, who published a widely available 1880 graphic manuscript entitled "Line of descent from Hugh Drury, of Boston, 1640, to Edwin Drury of Wilmette, in 1880." This manuscript identifies the wife of Zedekiah Drury, Sr., as Hannah Flagg, born 1 Oct 1716, daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Carter) Flagg.

But the Woburn and Middlesex County records do not support this claim. The Woburn marriage records show that Hannah Flagg married Nationel Reed on 3 October 1733 in Woburn. The Middlesex County probate records are consistent with the marriage record. On 14 July 1746 the children of Ebenezer Flagg of Woburn petitioned the probate court to allow their fathers will. Amongst the signatories were Hannah Reed and Nathaniel Reed. Hannah (Flagg) Reed was still married to Nathaniel Reed when he died in 1748. She was appointed administrator of his estate on 26 December 1748. These records preclude the possibility that she was the mother of Zedekiah Drury, who was born 1 March 1741/2 in Bedford.¹

In fact the mother of Zedekiah Drury, Jr., was Hannah Woolley, not Hannah Flagg. This is confirmed by the Bedford marriage records, and by a New England Historical and Genealogical Register article outlining the genealogy of the Woolley family in Concord (part of which became Bedford).²
