Notes:
Per record of marriage to Marion, he was the son of George Fawcett and Ann Pickles, both deceased by the date of his marriage, 20 Aug 1902.
He was, no doubt, the Walter Fawcett, age 10, in the 1881 English census, living in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, with his parents, George Fawcett, age 50, occupation "foreman stoker," and Ann Fawcett, age 45. Also in the household were his siblings: Sarah E. Fawcett, 20, William Fawcett, 18, Fred Fawcett, 13, Ann E. Fawcett, 8, Ada Fawcett, 5, and Nellie Fawcett, 2.1
He resided in "The Barracks" in Paisley, and was a Seargent in the 4th Royal Argylle and Sutherland Highlander unit when he married Marion on 20 Aug 1902.2
For the first few years of their marriage, they lived at "The Barracks" in Paisley, where their first three children were born.3 On 20 July 1907, Walter retired from the Royal Argylle and Sutherland Highlanders Unit, having earned a pension after serving for 18 years.4 Around that time, Walter became a store keeper, and the family moved to 14 Clarence St, Paisley, where their last child, George, was born.
When his wife died in 1910, Walter left the children in Scotland (probably with their grandparents, James and Marion Brown), and went to Canada to look for work. While there, he married his second wife, Emily, and found full time employment. In 1912 he sent for his four children, who came over on the Hesperian, unaccompanied by an adult, and arrived in Quebec on 4 June 1912.5 A delightful newspaper article about the four children, published in the Montreal Star, tells the story of their crossing.6
On 2 Aug 1915, he enlisted in the Canada Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, 42nd Regiment. On 6 Aug 1915 he signed an attestation paper for men enlisted in the force in which he identified his birth date as 15 July 1873, birth place as Leeds, Yorkshire, England, his wife as Emily Fawcett, his address as Orilla, Ontario, Box 1004, and his occupation as "commercial traveller." At the time, he was a Sgt Major in the 23rd Northern Pioneers (militia), and a member of the Church of England.7
