Notes:

Jonas Parmenter was born in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 14 Jan 1790, the son of Jacob and Lois (Goodnow) Parmenter.¹

He was a resident of Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire when he married Polly Bullock in Royalston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 20 May 1813.²

As was historically common, Jonas and Polly moved westward within their family group over the course of their lives, living in the same communities that Polly's family lived in, including her father, Ebenezer Bullock, her mother, Buelah, and her brothers, Levi and Ebenezer, Jr. Jonas' family was also part of the extended family group, including his parents, Jacob and Lois Parmenter, and his brothers Nathan and Asahel.

Per land records, Jonas, Polly, and Polly's parents were in Brutus, Cayuga County, New York, in 1818, when on 11 Oct 1818 Jonas and Polly (along with Nathan Bullock and his wife Hephzebah) sold 6 1/3 acres in Brutus to Polly's father, Ebenezer Bullock.³ A few days later, on 13 Oct 1818, Ebenezer Bullock sold the same parcel to Benjamin Bowen. Ebenezer's wife, Bulah, released her dower rights on the deed.⁴

In 1820 Jonas was living in Attica, Genesee County, New York. The household had a boy under 10 (Amos), one man 26 to 44 (Jonas), two females under 10 (unkown), and a female 26 to 44 (Polly). Nathan Parmenter is enumerated on an adjacent line in the census, probably Jonas' brother.

On 24 Dec 1825, Jonas and Polly Parmenter of Genesee County, New York, sold 66 acres in Sheldon, Genesee County to Ebenezer Bullock of Genesee County.⁵ On 17 Dec 1828, Ebenezer Bullock and his wife, Beulah, of Genesee County, New York, sold the same 66 acres in Sheldon back to Jonas Parmenter.⁶

In 1830, Jonas Parmenter was living in Sheldon, Genesee County, New York. The family composition matches the five children in his will (see below), along with his wife, with the following exception: there is an extra male age 20 to 30; and Jonas, who should be in the 40 to 49 column is missing (perhaps an error).⁷ At the time, Ebenezer Bullock, Jr and Levi Bullock (Polly's brothers) were both living in nearby Attica.⁸ Also living in Attica were Jonas' parents, Jacob and his wife (Lois), and Jonas' brother, Nathan Parmenter.⁹

Jacob Parmenter (Jonas' father), a Revolutionary War veteran, died in Attica 25 July 1836, per pension application of her widow, Lois Parmenter.¹⁰ In an affidavit, Lois attested that her marriage to Jacob Parmenter took place in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts 31 Jan 1782, which matches the Sudbury marriage record.¹¹ The pension application also contains an affidavit written by Nathan Parmenter, who declared himself to be a resident of Attica, and the son of Jacob Parmenter.¹² These records confirm the identity of Jacob Parmenter in Attica as the same man who lived in Sudbury, Massachusetts, and the same man whose wife Lois gave birth to Jonas Parmenter in Sudbury on 14 Jan 1790,¹³ and Nathan Parmenter in Sudbury on 24 Feb 1796.¹⁴

In 1840 Jonas Parmenter (spelled Parmeter) was living in Sardinia, Erie County, New York. He was age 50 to 59, living with a woman (Polly) of the same age. Also in the household were a male between 15 and 19 (Jonas, Jr), a female between 5 and 9 (Coredelia), and another between 15 and 19 (Sally). Beulah seems to be missing. Living in nearby dwellings were Amos Parmenter and Levi Bullock.¹⁵

He was probably the Joseph Parmenter in 1850 living in Johnston, Rock County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Joseph [sic, probably should have been Jonas], age 62, born New Hampshire, Polly Parmenter, age 62, born Massachusetts, and Polly C. Parmenter, age 19, born in New York.¹⁶ His daughter and son-in-law lived in the neighboring dwelling - Aaron and Sarah Colby. Another son, Jonas Parmenter, age 27, born New York, was also living in Johnstown, enumerated on the same census page. Amos Parmenter, another son of Jonas and Polly, was living in Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin, within a few dwellings of Jonas' brother-in-law, Levi Bullock.¹⁷

Sometime before the 1855 Wisconsin state census was taken (1 June 1855), Jonas and family moved to Middleton, Dane County, Wisconsin, where his son Amos was living. Jonas is not enumerated in the 1855 census, but Mrs. Parmenter, her son-in-law, Aaron Colby, and Amos Parmenter were all enumerated on the same census page.¹⁸ Mrs. Parmenter was likely the widow of Jonas. E. Bullock was also enumerated on the same census page, possibly Ebenezer Bullock, Polly's brother.

Jonas Parmenter died 25 April 1855, a resident of Middleton, Dane County, Wisconsin. His probate records identified the following heirs: his wife, Polly; and his children Amos, aged 38 years; Sally Colby, aged 34; Jonas, aged 32; Beulah Eastland, aged 28; and Coredelia, aged 24.¹⁹

He is buried in Middleton Junction Cemetery, Middleton, Dane County, Wisconsin. His gravestone is inscribed with:²⁰

The calculated birth date from his headstone is 13 Jan 1790, only one day off from the Sudbury birth record.

=== Discussion of His Parentage ===

Online genealogies do not usually connect Jonas Parmenter, son of Jacob and Lois (Goodnow) Parmenter of Sudbury, Massachusetts, with the Jonas Parmenter who married Polly Bullock in Royalston, Massachusetts. This is probably because the Jonas Parmenter who married Polly was supposedly born in New Hampshire, per most census records that refer to him. None identify his birth place as Massachusetts. This will be discussed in more detail below.

The primary reason for connecting Jacob Parmenter and Lois Goodnow as the parents of the Jonas Parmenter who married Polly Bullock are the family groups Jonas lived with in Brutus, Attica, Sardinia, in New York, and Middleton in Wisconsin. He was always found living near Jacob and his children, or Polly Bullocks relatives, sometimes both. The fact that his age at death, per gravestone in Middleton, matches his birth date in Sudbury (within a day), adds more weight to the argument.

The land records, as discussed above, are clear on the fact that Polly's parents lived in Brutus and later Attica at the same time Jonas and Polly lived in those places. But the land records in New York are sparse for Jacob Parmenter. No records of land transactions were found in Cayuga County or Genesee County, New York, so no land record with his wife's name on it could be found.

But the pension records for Jacob Parmenter provide detail on the places he lived, which were many. Among them were, in order: (1) Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, (2) Brutus, Cayuga County, New York, (3) Groveland, Livingston County, New York, and (4) Attica, Genesee County, New York where he remained until his death.¹⁰ Unfortunately, the time frames when he lived at these locations is not specified, except for Attica, where he was living on 16 Oct 1832, when he wrote an affidavit for his pension application, and on 25 July 1836, when he died there. This suggests that he is almost certainly the Jacob Parmiter living in Attica in 1830, along with the following people who also lived in Attica: Nathan Parmiter (his son), Asahel Parmiter (likely his son), Ebenezer Bullock, Jr, and Levi Bullock. His son Jonas Parmenter, who had been living in Attica in 1820, was living in nearby Sheldon in 1830.

In 1820, per census, Jacob Parmenter was living in Groveland, Ontario (now Livingston) County, New York.²¹ The Jacob Parmenter living in Brutus at the time was probably his son - enumerated on the census page adjacent to Ebenezer Bullock.²²

These records show that Jacob Parmenter lived in the same towns that his son Jonas lived in (Swanzey, Brutus, then Attica), though the degree of overlap is uncertain. Furthermore, Jacob Parmenter or his children overlapped the Bullock family in Brutus (1820), Attica (1830, 1840), Sardinia (1840), and Lima, Wisconsin (1850). These family associations are taken as strong evidence that Jonas is the son of Jacob and Lois (Goodnow) Parmenter.

=== Was Jonas Parmenter Born in New Hampshire? ===

Answer: probably not. Here are the reasons to think the census records are wrong.

Jonas died in April 1855, before the Wisconsin state census. Only one census was taken while he was alive - the 1850 census. In that census, he is listed as Joseph [sic] Parmenter, age 62, born in New Hampshire, living in Johnstown, Rock County, Wisconsin, with his wife, Polly Parmenter, age 62, born in Massachusetts, and Polly C. Parmenter, age 19, born in New York. His daughter and son-in-law lived in the neighboring dwelling - Aaron and Sarah Colby, and their family. His son, Jonas Parmenter, was apparently living two dwelling distant. Because of the proximity of his relations, it is likely this is the correct census entry for Jonas - probably the census taker heard his name wrong. In all likelihood, it was Polly who provided the information to the census taker.

His place of birth appears in subsequent census records for his children, including Cordelia Hawes and Jonas Parmenter in the 1880 census, both living in Middleton, Wisconsin, both say their parents were born in New Hampshire. Bulah Eastland was living with her husband David in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1880. Her census listing says her father was born in Vermont, mother in Massachusetts. In 1880, Sarah and her husband Aaron Colby were living in Silver Lake, Palo Alto County, Iowa. Her census says her father was born in New Hampshire, her mother in Massachusetts. So there are some errors and inconsistency, but none lists their father's birthplace as Massachusetts.

From the above, it would appear that Polly and his children thought he was born in New Hampshire (or, in one case, Vermont). Given that Jonas was a resident of Swanzey, New Hampshire, when he married Polly Bullock (from the marriage record), it is not surprising that he was perceived to be from that state. After their marriage, Polly and Jonas probably settled in Swanzey, New Hampshire, since Jonas lived there and probably had a livelihood there. His parents lived there too (from Revolutionary War pension application), though exactly when and for how long is unknown.

In sum, given these facts, it is plausible and not surprising that Jonas' family thought of him as a native of New Hampshire.
