Notes:

Jared D. Wheelock received his early education at home, and later attended the Medical College at Woodstock, Vermont. He commenced his practice as a physician at Greensborough, Vermont, in 1843, and went to Stowe two years later, where he remained until 1855. While there, he married on 18 January 1845 Mary Robinson, daughter of Dr. Joseph Robinson. In 1850 and 1851 he was elected representative of Stowe in the Vermont State Legislature.

He left Stowe for Clearwater, Wright County, Minnesota in 1855, where he engaged in farming and medicine. He was the first physician in Wright County, the first Justice of the Peace in Clearwater, and was Chariman of the first Board of Supervisors. He also served as Town Treasurer and was a long time member of the School Board.

During the Civil War, he was Surgeon of the board of enrollment for the second district of Minnesota, having his headquarter in St. Paul.^1,2,3,4

Research Notes:

In 1850 Jared Wheelock was living in Stowe, Lamoille Co, VT, age 30, physician, with his wife Mary, age 23, Maria Gold, age 13, and Isabella Wheelock, 1.

By 1860 he was living in Clearwater, Wright County, Minnesoata, enumerated as "G. D. Wheelock," age 39, physician, born Vermont, with Mary, 34, born Vermont, Isabell, 11, born Vermont, and Annette, 1, born Minnesota.

In 1870, he was again in Clearwater, age 49, born Vermont, physician, with Mary, 44, born Vermont, Isabelle, 21, born Vermont, Fanny, age 6, born Minnesota, and Isaac Philo, 19, laborer, born Pennsylvania.

In 1875 he was living in Clearwater, age 54, with Mary, age 49, Isabelle, 20, all born in Vermont, and Fannie S., age 11, and George Williams, age 12, both born in Minnesota.

In 1880 he was again living in Clearwater, 59, physician, with Mary, 54, and daughters Isabella, 31, and Fannie L., 16. Fannie was born in Minnesota, the rest in Vermont. A farm laborer was also in the household, George Williams, 17, born Minnesota.

In 1885 he was living in Clearwater, 64, born Vermont, with Isabelle Wheelock, 32, born Vermont, and Fannie Wheelock, 20, born Minnesota.

Birth Date:

There are multiple published biographies of Dr. Jared D. Wheelock, all of which give a birth date of 28 Sep 1820.^2,3,4 This contrasts with the date given by The Wheelock Family of Calais, by Waite, which says 28 Sep 1819.

The 1820 date is consistent with all census records except 1850. The 1850 census was taken on 7 September 1850 in Stowe, and lists Jared Wheelock as 30 years old, which would be correct if he was born 28 Sep 1819. On that date, he would have been 30, just about to turn 31.

On the other hand, the 1860 census was taken on 4 August 1860 in Clearwater - Jared was listed as 39 years old, which is consistent with a birth on 28 Sep 1820. The 1870 and 1880 census also support a birth in 1820.

The birth usually given in online genealogies (as of June 2022) is 28 Sep 1819, matching the date given in The Wheelock Family of Calais, by Waite. This date was supplied by "the late Mrs. Newton," presumably Jared's sister, Orilla (Wheelock) Newton. The source of the 1820 birth date is unknown.

The 1819 date is retained here because the source is presumably reliable, and the 1850 census supports it.
