Henry J. Clarke, in "Capt. Ralph Wheelock of Sturbridge, His Ancestry and Some of His Descendants", Quinabang Historical Society Leaflets, Vol 1, No. 15, 29 June 1903, says the following about Calvin:

"It appears that Calvin did not have the ambition of some of his brothers to acquire property, but he was a fearless man. One night, the occupant of the house on what has been called the James Morse place, at the fork of the roads, on coming home in the evening, saw a ghost in the road opposite the swine pen, on the opposite side of the road, west of the house. He did not dare to go near it, but ran to Calvin's house on the top of the hill, and secured his aid. Calvin ran after the apparition, and followed it to the woods, beyond the school house, and warned it not to be seen in those parts again."

Notes:

A marriage between Miss Sophia Wheelock and Rufus Houghton, both of Northborough, is recorded in Northborough - 3 Sep 1843. A separate intention is also recorded. No obvious death record for Rufus Houghton has been found in Northborough or neighboring Bolton (which had a population of Houghtons, including a couple men named Rufus Houghton).

However, the Stonington Connecticut marriage record between Sophia Houghton "of Northborough, Mass." and David Hawthorn (sic) 26 May 1848 renders it very likely that these two Sophias are the same - the daughter of David Wheelock and Naomi Fairbanks. No other Sophia Houghton or Sophia Wheelock is known to be living in Northborough at the time; and the marriage to David Cawthorne is well established in the probate records, including the administration of estate of Naomi Wheelock (Worc Prob case 63769). The timing of the marriage is consistent with the births of the children of David and Sophia (though Sophia would have been in the advanced stages of pregnancy when she married David). Sophia and David are enumerated in the 1850 census living in Northborough; their son George Cawthorne was later adopted by Sophia's half brother, Henry P. Wheelock (see notes for Henry), after Sophia and David passed away.

The misspelling of the Cawthorne surname in the marriage record is unfortunate, but entirely plausible. An examination of the original record would be in order.

David Cawthorn, comb maker, born England, is enumerated in the 1850 census, age 29, living in Northborough with Sophia Cawthorn, age 40, born MA, Edwin Cawthorn, age 2, born MA, and William Cawthorn, age 19, born England, comb maker.

This family, minus Sophia, is enumerated in the 1855 MA state census living in Northborough: David Cawthorn, age 35, comb maker, born England, Catherine Cawthorn (second wife), age 26, born England, Edwin Cawthorn, age 7, born MA, David Cawthorn, Jr, age 5, born MA, and George Cawthorn, age 3, born MA.

George Cawthorn was adopted by Henry P. Wheelock (half uncle), and changed his surname to Wheelock.¹ He is enumerated in the 1860 census as George Wheelock, living in the household of Henry P. Wheelock in Fitchburg, MA.
