The Hisory of Worcester and It's People, by Charles Nutt, identifies Ruth Kelley, wife of Asa Newell, as a daughter of Robert and his second wife, Lydia (Marrs) Kelly,¹ but this is proven wrong by guardianship and probate records.

In her will, written 8 August 1796, Abigail Wheelock called Ruth Kalley the heir of her deceased daughter, Ruth Kalley. By 1796 Ruth was already married to Asa Newell, raising the question as to why Abigail referred to her as Ruth Kalley instead of Ruth Newell. This was almost certainly a mistake. Abigail did not use the married name of Ruth's sister either, referring to her as Abigail Kalley rather than Abigail Bacon.²

As possible explanation, one might question whether the marriages of Ruth Kelley to Asa Newell and Abigail Kalley to John Bacon are accurate - but other records confirm those marriages, including a deed in which Chapin Kelley sold property formerly owned by his father, Robert Kelley. The deed mentions the heirs of Robert Kelley, calling Ruth the wife of Asa Newell, and Abigail the wife of John Bacon.³

As further proof, when Ruth's father, Robert Kelley, died in 1783, all of his children except Rachel were minors - all requiring guardians. Joel, Chapin, Abigail, and Ruth were put under the guardianship of Ruth (Wheelock) Kelley's brother - Edward Wheelock.⁴ Mary, Lydia, Robert, Henry, William, and Abner were put under the guardianship of Lydia (Marrs) Kelley's brother - William Marrs.⁵ In other words, the children of the first wife and second wife were each put under the care of their respective mother's relatives.

Finally, her death record and gaurdianship records indicate a birth date of about 1770 (or 1771), too early to be a daughter of Robert's second wife, Lydia Marrs.

Sidney Wheelock's Stoneham death record places his birth date on 2 Dec 1847, similar but not identical to the birth date of George S. Wheelock found in the Weymouth Vital Records. At various times, Sidney appears in the records as George S. Wheelock, G. Sidney Wheelock, and Sidney Wheelock.
