He was a mechanical engineer.

He lived in Lawrence in 1850. After his marriage to Caroline they moved to Charlestown where they are found in the 1855 Massachusetts census.

He died of "congestive chills" on 9 Oct 1867 in St. Louis, age 44 years.¹

Research Notes:

Edwards and Caroline resided on Elm Street (probably in Charlestown) when their daughter Fannie E. Wheelock was born in Newton in 1851. They resided on 117 Elm Street in Charlestown, or at least their daughter Mary did, when she died of dysentery on 26 July 1855.

In 1855 the family was living in Charlestown, Ward 2, Middlesex County, Mass., Edward, 32, machinist, Caroline E., 25, Fanny C. 3, and Mary H., 2, all surname Wheelock, all born in Mass.

There is a 28 Oct 1864 marriage intention for Caroline Elizabeth Wheelock of Charlestown, age 34, born Conway, NH, daughter of Seth B. Keith and Harriet, to marry William H. Drew, also of Charlestown, aged 40 years, occupation shipwright, born in Medford, son of Lazarus and Bathsheba; second marriage for both.²

No marriage record for Caroline Elizabeth Wheelock and William H. Drew found. No apparent record of William H. Drew living in Massachusetts in 1865. There is a Caroline E. Wheelock, born ca 1831 NH, who lived in Malden in 1865, single, born New Hampshire, living with Chas S. Wright. This could be a different Caroline, the daughter of Asa Wheelock and Abigail Reed, who died in Melrose 8 Aug 1890.

William H. Drew died in Malden, Massachusetts, 3 Aug 1877.³

In 1877, 1878, 1880 Mrs. C. E. Wheelock lived at 63 Hancock in Boston.⁴

Caroline E. Wheelock of Boston married Gideon L. Gamage of Lynn 17 Feb 1881 in Lynn. She was 49 at the time, born Conway, New Hampshire, daughter of Seth and Harriet Keith, second marriage for both.⁵

She died in Newton, Caroline E. Gamage, 17 July 1911, born 4 Sep 1830 in Eaton, NH, daughter of Seth Keith and Harriet Harmon.⁶ Informant was Mrs. F. G. L. Henderson (her daughter).

Ruth was a well know educator and Congregationalist in Hartford, CT. From 1785 to 1807 she established a school which tought more than 2,000 young women from around the world. Her tombstone reads:

"Madam Ruth Patten Relict of Rev. William Patten and daughter of Rev. Eleazer Wheelock D. D. Founder and first President of Dartmouth College, NH. She fell asleep in Jesus Dec 5 1831 in the XCII year of her age. She was 78 years a member of the Church, was strong in faith, cheerful in trials, fervent in prayer, full of great works. A mother in Israel."
