Notes:

The Heath Vital Records (MA) record the birth of John as follows: John Wheelock, husband Dorothy, born 23 Dec 1756 in Leominster. There is record of marriage between John Wheelock, Jr. to Dolly Wilder, 14 Oct 1779, in the Lancaster Vital Records (pg 126).

John Wheelock served as a drummer in the Revolutionary War, and was in the battles of Bunker Hill and Brandywine. He later applied for and received a pension for his service (Revolutionary War Pension File, John Wheelock, S43295).

John and Dorothy had probably moved to Heath by 29 May 1780 when he called himself "of Heath" in a deed (Franklin Co. 2:501). But in another deed dated one week later he calls himself "of Lancaster" (Franklin Co. 6:43).

The Heath town records contain a family register for all of the children of John and Dorothy. The place of birth of the first three children is specified, but the birth places of the remaining children are not. Probably most of them were born in Heath, but John Wheelock sold his property in Heath on 5 Feb 1799 (Franklin 12:458), and was living in Williamstown, Berkshire Co, MA by 1800 when he is enumerated in the census there as "Wheelock." John and Dorothy became members of the Williamstown Congregational Church in 1800, and their seven eldest daughters became members of the same church in subsequent years through 1808 [see note 1]. Probably the children born after 5 Feb 1799 were born in Williamstown. In support of this, the War of 1812 enlistment records for Dexter Wheelock, born 26 Aug 1799, state that he was born in Williamstown (U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798–1914, at Ancestry.com).

The baptism on 4 Nov 1792 of the following children of John (of Heath) are recorded in Shelburne: Betsey, Cephas, Dorothy, Emerly, Lucinda, Polly, Sally, Sukey; from records of the Congragational Church, Shelburne Center. (Src: Vital Records of Shelburne to 1850).

By 1810 the family was living in Hancock, Berkshire Co., MA (1810 U.S. census). Hancock shares a border with Stephentown, Rensselaer Co, NY, and some members of the family lived in Stephentown after 1810 (John, possibly Dorothy, and their daughter, Betsey Wheelock who married Eli Dougas, both of whom are buried in Stephentown).

John Wheelock moved to Vienna, Oneida Co, NY, near the eastern shores of Oneida Lake in 1813. His sons, Curtis and Otis followed one year later. From "Our County and It's People, A Descriptive work on Oneida County, NY", edited by Daniel E. Wager, The Boston History Company, 1896, pg 589: "John Wheelock, who served seven years in the Revolutionary war, father of Otis Wheelock, settled in 1813 near Fish Creek, NY, where his son subsequently lived, the latter came into the town in 1814 with his brother Curtis. At the time of his arrival the settlers were few and nearly the whole town was covered with a heavy growth of hemlock."

In 1814 John is listed as a land owner in Bengal (now Vienna), owning 100 acres of land, being lot 3, township 9 (Owners of land, 1814, Oneida County, New York [FHL 1,435,048], image 249 of 258).

John Wheelock was a resident of Vienna when he started his pension application on 4 June 1818. He was a resident of Stephentown on 4 July 1820 when he wrote an affidavit in support of his application. His pension was issued on 7 Sep 1820, and he received pension payments in New York until Sep 1822, when his last payment was issued (United States Revolutionary War Pension Payment Ledgers, 1818–1872 [FHL 1,319,381]).

He has not been found in the 1820 census, but he may have been living with his daughter, Betsey (Wheelock) Douglas, who lived in Stephentown at the time.

George Holcomb, a resident of Stephentown, and a neighbor of John's daughter, Betsey (Wheelock) Douglas, and her husband Eli Douglas, made an entry in his diary on 30 Nov 1822: "today a funeral [for] Old Mr. Wheelock he is father-in-law to Elijah [Eli] Douglass of this town [Stephentown]."

The death of Dorothy (Wilder) Wheelock is recorded in Heath, but it is not clear that she died there.

Their daughter, Mary "Polly" (Wheelock) Grandey, died in 1839, without children. She appointed her brother, Alonzo Wheelock, executor of her estate. Alonzo published a probate notice in the newspaper that listed all the "heirs and next of kin" of Mary. This probate notice lists all of the children of John and Dorothy alive in 1839, including married names of the daughters, and where they lived. This has proven instrumental in identifying the husbands of John and Dorothy's nine daughters [Albany Argus (Albany, New York), 4 Oct 1839, p. 4, col. 4, at GenealogyBank.com]. From the probate notice, the heirs and next of kin of Mary, excluding Alonzo, are (numbers and formatting added):

  1. "... Joel Frost and Susan Frost, of Bridport, county of Addison and state of Vermont;
  2. Pliny Blackman and Lucinda Blackman, Elias Bartlet and Eliza Bartlet, of Jericho, county of Chittenden and state of Vermont,
  3. William Frost and Caroline Frost, county of Addison and State of Vermont;
  4. George Rich, state of Vermont, town and county unknown;
  5. Philena Wilcox, Elisha Smedley and Alonzo Smedley, whose residence is unknown;
  6. Dexter Wheelock, of the state of Illinois, town and county unknown;
  7. Josephus Wheelock and Nelson Perry, of the state of Alabama, town and county unknown;
  8. Roxana Rich, of the state of Missouri, town and county unknown;
  9. Dorothy Ross, of the town of Atlas and state of Illinois,
  10. John Wheelock, Almond, county of Allegany and state of N. York;
  11. Otis Wheelock, Vienna, county of Oneida and state of New York;
  12. Curtiss Wheelock, Horace Wheelock and Leonard Perry, of Jacksonburgh, county of Jackson and state of Michigan;
  13. Elizabeth, the daughter of Betsey Douglass, deceased, Stephentown, county of Rensselaer and state of New York; and
  14. Horace Packer, of Oxford in Chenango county, special guardian of John Rich, Dexter Smedley and James Smedley, minor heirs at law of said deceased..."
