William's second wife was called "Lida A. Doland" in his obituary, which says they were married 20 Nov 1884 in Middle Creek, Marion County, Kansas.¹

In 1880, Lida Doland was living in Salina, Saline County, Kansas, listed as "Lydia Dolan", age 19, born Kentucky, parents born in Prussia. Her husband was B. U. Dolan, age 28, born Rhode Island, parents born in Ireland. Also in the household was Lillie Dolan, age 1 month, born Kansas.

On 2 Nov 1883, Lida A. Doland published intention to sue Bernard Doland for divorce.²

Lida A. Doland was granted a divorce from Bernard Doland by District Court in Saline County, Kansas, 14 Jan 1884.³

In 1900, Lida A. Wheelock, born Oct 1862 in Kentucky, parents born in Germany, was living in Gypsum, Saline County, Kansas, with her husband, W. Henry Wheelock. She was the mother of three children, all living. Also in the household were her presumed children - Lillie Doland, born Oct 1879, and L. May Doland, born Sep 1883, both born in Kansas, both listed as step daughters of W. Henry Wheelock; and Henry Wheelock, son, born Sep 1887 in Kansas.

On 31 March 1906, C. H. Wheelock was referred to as the proprietor of the New Elgin hotel.⁴

In 1908, a newsaper advertisement for Christmas dinner at the New Elgin Hotel in Marion, Kansas, refers to Mrs. W. H. Wheelock as "proprietess" of the hotel, and Lillian W. Immer as manager.⁵

In 1925, Lida A. Wheelock, age 65, widow, born Kentucky, was living with her sister Mary Beech, 50, born in Kansas, and with her grand-daughter, Virginia Beech, age 14, born Colorado.

In 1930 she was again in Marion, age 67, occupation proprietor, rooming house, living with her daughter, Mamie Coen, 35, and her sister, Mary Beetch, age 64, single, born in Kansas. Both Lyda and Mary list their father's birth place as Germany, their mother's as Ohio. In 1950, Mary Beetch, age 73, was "never married (single)", a patient in the State Home for the feeble minded in Walnut Cowley County, Kansas. This implies Lida's maiden name was Beetch. See notes about Beetch surname below.

In 1940 Lida A. Wheelock was living in Marion, Marion County, Kansas, age 78, with her son in law, Edward B. Coen, and her daughter, Clara May Coen, age 55. This latter is presumably the L. May Doland, born Sep 1883, living with Lida and William in 1900.

The wedding of Clara Mae Wheelock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wheelock, and Dr. Edward Coen, of Bloomington, Illinois, was announced in the 20 June 1907 edition of the Marion Record. It mentions "little William Immer," the brides nephew, and Mrs. Immer, the brides sister. Reception was held at the Elgin Hotel.⁶

Beetch Surname:

The 1930 census identifies Mary Beetch as the sister of Lida A. Wheelock. Mary was single, suggesting that Lida's maiden name may have been Beetch.

Per census records, Mary Beetch was born circa 1875. The 1930 census is an outlier, saying she was born circa 1865.

There was a Mary Beech [sic], born circa 1875 in Kansas, enumerated in the 1880 census, living in the household of her mother, Catherine Beech, who was age 44, divorced, born in Prussia. The following children were in the household (Lida not present): Mike, Victoria, Charles, Simon, and Biernard Beech. Per FindAGrave memorial, Catharine Sedan Beetch died 30 May 1900, buried in Fairview Cemetery, Carlton, Dickinson County, Kansas. She was divorced from her husband Jacob.⁷

An obituary for Catherine Beetch was published in the 8 June 1900 edition of The Gypsum Advocate. It identifes her birth date, her maiden name, confirms her marriage to Jacob Beetch, an states that her memorial service was conducted at the residence of W. H. Wheelock.⁸

A probate notice for the estate of Catharine Beetch was published in the 10 May 1901 edition of The Salina Semi-Weekly Journal identfying the following heirs: Henry Beetch, Bernard Beetch, Mrs. Lida A. Wheelock, and Mrs. Lizzie Haney.⁹

W. H. Wheelock was granted letters of administration on the estate of Catharine Beetch.¹⁰

Unfortunately, the probate files for Catharine Beetch deceased (case 1256, 1 May 1901), and Mary Beetch insane (case 1262, 29 May 1901) are both missing from the FHL film 2367400.

These facts confirm that Lida's maiden name was Beetch. The identify of her surname as Coen or Timmer in the letter from Albert Wheelock to his relative, Virginia (Rees) Burdick, date unkown, was likely an error. The names of Lida's son's in law were Coen and Immer, possibly the source of this confusion.
