James Edmund Crowell
Birth: 22 Jul 1957
- Private records of Theresa Anne (Crowell) Bickhart, Mar 1999.
Father: Harry Maurice Wheelock Crowell
Mother: Beatrice Mary Ellen Walters
Notes:
Theresa Anne Crowell Bickhart writes of her brother as follows:
"According to my Mother, Grandma Dime had promised to give Mom $500.00 if she had a son & would give him the middle name of Edmond. In those days you didn't know in advance what sex your child would be. So Mother had a boy and in the hospital filled out the papers for naming James Edmund Crowell. Dime was furious Edmond had been misspelled, with a "u". Grandma Dime lived with us & much to Mother's disbelief, I took Grandma's side. Grandma gave my Mother $50.00 for the name. Grandma wanted to honor her late husband with the name, she also felt that doing so his name would go on, as they never could have children. Hard feelings always remained."

- Death Records, Massachusetts Archives, vol 87, pg 311, Frances Gertrude Wheelock, age 30y.
Death: 26 Jul 1909
- Death Records, Massachusetts Archives, vol 87, pg 311, Frances Gertrude Wheelock.
Burial: Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, MA
- Death Records, Massachusetts Archives, vol 87, pg 311, Frances Gertrude Wheelock. Location of burial in Holyhood Cemetery, section 25 on Williams Road, confirmed by Holyhood Cemetery Association, no headstone.
Father: William Gately
Mother: Mary Lennan
Spouse: Oscar Merritt Wheelock
Marriage: 1 Jun 1904, Boston, MA
- Boston Marriage Records, Massachusetts Archives, Vol 547, Pg 591; marriage record for Oscar Merritt Wheelock and Francis Gertrude Gately, 1 Jun 1904.
Notes:
The marriage certificate and death certificate give conflicting information about the parents of Frances Gertrude (----) Wheelock. The marriage certificate identifies her parents as William Gately and Mary Lennan; the death certificate gives Patrick McGrath and Margaret Conlon, both born in Ireland. She is buried next to Patrick McGrath (d. 21 Nov 1869, age 46 years, from Roscommon Ireland), Mary Mcgrath (d. 16 May 1906, age 75 years), Patrick Conlon and Bridget Conlon, wife of Patrick, per Holyhood Cemetery Association, though she has no headstone. No resolution for this conflict has been discovered. A Gertrude McGrath, age 1, is found in the 1880 Census, daughter of Patrick McGrath and Mary, living in Boston, MA. Of interest is the fact that Mary Lennon (Gannon?) was a servant in a neighboring residence.
Frances Gertrude Wheelock died of tuberculosis.

Notes:
He lived in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and was the Chicopee librarian for many years, a position for which he was well known within the town. He was the editor of the Chicopee Journal, and later a printer. He was a member of the old town school board, secretary of the Unitarian church, and was a secretary and director of the Chicopee savings bank. He belonged to the Chicopee lodge of Masons.1
Research Notes:
He is enumerated in the 1860 U.S. census, age 30, living in Chicopee, printer, with his wife Hannah, no others in the household. He is not found in the 1870 census, but was in Chicopee again in 1880, age 50, with his wife Hannah, no children.
In his will, written 24 Feb 1898, bequests were left to the city of Chicopee for maintaining his lot in the Fairview Cemetery, Ann A. Smith, the Unitarian Society of Chicopee, his books, library articles and library furniture to his nephew Dr. Paul Phillips of Amherst, five hundred dollars to his brother John Francis Wheelock of Chelsea, Michigan, and the remainder of his estate to his nephews and nieces: Dr. Paul E. Phillips of Amherst, Elizabeth Ruth Phillips of Hartford, Conn., Anna K. See, wife of Rev. E. R. See of Brooklyn, NY, Charlotte Mary, sister of Paul E. Phillips, Kittie M. Clark, wife of Frank M. Clark of Haverhill, Mass.2
The records are conflicting regarding his birth date. According to the Amherst genealogical record book, he was born 25 Jan 1829. His headstone says 1830. His age at death, and the census records (1860, 1880) imply 1830. His death notice in the Fall River Daily news states that he died 26 Feb 1898 (in agreement with the Chicopee death record), age 69, which would imply he was born in 1829. Finally, his Mason membership card agrees with the Amherst record book, giving a birth date of 25 Jan 1829.
