- Emily Wakefield, born calculated 12 Jun 1832
- Orson Wakefield, born 17 Oct 1834, VT
- Louisa Wakefield, born about 1837, Hardwick, Caledonia Co, VT
- Florinda Wakefield, born 27 May 1839, VT
- Gilbert L. Wakefield, born 19 Apr 1842, VT
- Laura A. Wakefield, born about 1845, VT
Notes:
Leonard was born in Lyman, New Hampshire, but moved with his parents to Hardwick, Caledonia Co, Vermont, where his father (Jonathan) appears in the 1820 U.S. census.
He married Rachel Wheelock of Calais, and moved to Colchester, VT, where Rachel died. He married second 12 Mar 1850 Fanny Randall in Shelburne, VT. He had children by both wives. Leonard, Fanny, and family moved to Iowa before 1860, when he is listed in the U.S. census living in Center Township, Clinton Co, IA. He died in 1891 and is buried in Le Claire, Scott Co, Iowa.
Research Notes:
Leonard Wakefield was born in New Hampshire, despite the claim made by The Wheelock Family of Calais and most online genealogies that he was born in Hardwick, VT.
The following facts argue in favor of a New Hampshire birth: his headstone in Jacks Cemetery, Le Clarie, Iowa has a carved inscription which identifies his birthplace as Lyman, NH. The 1850, 1860, and 1880 U.S. census records list his birthplace as NH, as does the 1885 Iowa state census.
The Wheelock Family of Calais identifies Leonard's parents as Jonathan Wakefield and Mindwell Stannard.
Jonathan Wakefield was a resident of Lyman, Grafton Co, NH, when Leonard was born in 1805. He appears in the Lyman town records as a taxpayer in the years 1803 through 1806. William, Abel, and Reuben Wakefield (brothers of Jonathan) also appear in the Lyman tax lists. This corroborates the Lyman, NH birthplace inscription on Leonards headstone.1
Jonathan is enumerated in the 1810 census living in Bethlehem, NH, adjacent to Lyman, with two boys under ten years of age (Leonard would have been 5), consistent with a Lyman, NH birthplace.
By 1820, Jonathan had apparently moved to Hardwick, Caledonia Co, VT, where he appears in the U.S. census.
There are a few records that suggest he was born in Vermont, but these are probably mistakes.
The 1870 U.S. census shows Leonard Wakefield living in Le Claire Township, Scott County, IA, age 65, born Vermont, with his wife, Fanny, age 50, born Vermont, and two children: Martha, age 14, born in Vermont, and Willie, age 9, born Iowa. The column for birth place in the 1870 census for Leonard Wakefield spells out Vermont, but has a question mark annotated above it. The informant, possibly Fanny, may have been unsure of Leonards birthplace when supplying information to the census taker.
The death certificate of his son, William A. Wakefield, who died 3 Oct 1916 in Clinton, Iowa, identifies his father's birth place as Vermont. The informant for the death certificate was William's wife. He died twenty five years after his father; his wife was probably mistaken about the location of Leonard's birth.2
The Wheelock Family of Calais cites "the Wakefield genealogy" as the source of the information placing Leonard's birth in Hardwick. This is probably Homer Wakefield, M.D., Wakefield Memorial: Comprising an Historical, Genealogical and Biographical Register of the Name and Family of Wakefield (Bloomfield, Illinois: privately published, 1897), p. 72, in the "North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000" collection at Ancestry.com, Oct 2020.
This book also identifies Leonard's parents as Mindwell Stannard and Jonathan Wakefield, and identifies William, Abel, and Reuben as brothers of Jonathan. This book is probably the source of the misinformation about Leonard's birth in Hardwick, VT; but the error is understandable given that Jonathan and family moved to Hardwick between 1810 and 1820, when Leonard was still young.

John Wheelock
Birth: 6 Mar 1795
- Records of Danielle Hergenrader, a descendant of Edmund and Polley (Wheelock) Parmenter, through Glibert Wheelock Parmenter, Mar 2008. Danielle owned the Wheelock/Parmenter family bible that had been in the possession of the Northborough Historical Society. This information, however, may not have come from that Bible.
Death: 1 Nov 1826, Northborough, Worcester Co, MA
- Northborough Vital Records
Father: Eliab Wheelock
Mother: Mary Gassett
Notes:
The Northborough Vital Records indicate that John Wheelock was age 32y 7m 26d, when he died 1 Nov 1826, implying a birth date of 6 Mar 1794, in disagreement with the 6 Mar 1795 date shown here.
It is likely that John had a son named Franklin Wheelock who lived with Edmund and Polley Parmenter in 1850 (per census), and who died in 1851. Franklin's death record indicates that he was born in Northborough, son of John and Fanny Wheelock.
There is a Northborough 25 July 1820 marriage (probably intention) record for John Wheelock and Fanny Elder.1
In the 23 Sep 1820 Repertory (Boston, Massachusetts), p. 4, found at GenealogyBank.com, 28 April 2021: "Married, In Worcester, on the 14th inst. Mr. John Wheelock, of Northborough, to Miss Fanny Elder, of W."
