  12. Sophronia Wheelock, born 25 Oct 1826

Notes:

The 1880 Census entries for her children indicate that she was born in Connecticut.1

There are three headstones in the Prospect Lawn Cemetery that have Rena's name on it. The first is that of her own. This headstone refers to her as Rene. The second is that of her daughter, Scinda, which refers to her as Rena. The third is that of her son, Zenas, which refers to her as Rene.

Rena's headstone reads as follows:

In Memory of Rene Wheelock, wife of Silas Wheelock, who died Jan. 28, 1833, age 55 years. [There is a further inscription, but it is unreadable.]

Research Notes for Rena Baldwin:

Her last name of Baldwin comes from family records. This could be confirmed by obtaining a death certificate for one of her children - perhaps Silas B. or Joseph.

Per headstone, she died 28 Jan 1833, aged 55 years. This places her birth year in 1777-1778. Specifically, her birth date is between 29 Jan 1777 and 28 Jan 1778, suggesting she was probably born in 1777. Census records indicate she was born in Connecticut.

A Rine Baldwin, daughter of Samuel and Lucy, was born in Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut 5 Dec 1776.2 Per profile on FamilySearch.org, Rine's whereabouts after her birth are unknown, thus cannot be ruled out as a candidate.3

An Irena Baldwin, daughter of Abner Baldwin, Jr. and Achsa, was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, 24 March 1779.4 Her profile on FamilySearch.org says nothing about who she married, where she lived, or when she died. Her brother, John, died in Oaksville, Otsego County, New York. She can't be ruled out as a candidate either.5

There was an Irene Baldwin, born in Branford 3 May 1779, daughter of John and Allethea. She maried Samuel Frisbee, so can be ruled out as a candidate for Rena.6

It is possible Silas Wheelock met Rena in Augusta, Oneida County, New York, where he lived as a very young man. His brother, Reu, met his bride in Augusta, so it is plausible Silas did the same. A Jesse Baldwin paid taxes in Augusta in 1803. Asahel Baldwin paid taxes there in 1801.7

Besides the tax record mentioned above, no other record of a Jesse Baldwin in or around Augusta, New York, has yet been found. There is no Jesse living in Oneida County in 1790 or 1800. There was a Jesse Baldwin living in New Mildford, Litchfield County, Connecticut in 1790, with a sizeable family, including 6 females. But he was not found in Litchfield County, or in Oneida County in 1800. He could be the Jesse Baldwin living in Andover, Windsor County, Vermont in 1800.

Asahel Baldwin (1762-1846), born in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut, died in Grove, Alleghany County, New York, 9 Feb. 1846, lived in Augusta 1800, per profile on FamilySearch.org.8 He was likely the man of that name taxed in Augusta in 1801. Per FamilySearch.org profile, he married in Washington, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 11 July 1782, Lois Bassett or Lois Bailey. Rena was presumably born prior to 11 July 1782, and is therefore not likely a member of this family (but perhaps related).

Per 1800 census, there were multiple people with surname Baldwin living in Oneida County: an Asa (Asahel) Baldwin living in Augusta; Heman Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, and Lovet Baldwin living in Paris; Freat(?) Baldwin living in Whitestown; and Samuel W. Baldwin living in Deerfield.

The Samuel W. Baldwin of Deerfield in 1800 can be eliminated from consideration. He made his will 12 Jan 1827, named his wife, Esther, sons Samuel C. Baldwin, George Baldwin, Erastus Baldwin, and Norman Baldwin. No daughters were mentioned.9

Heman may be a candidate. In 1800 he was living in Paris, NY (near Augusta) and had a single daughter under 10 (too young to be Rena). Per The Baldwin Genealogy, from 1500 to 1881, he was born in North Branford, Connecticut, married Irene Russell of that place, moved to Whitestown, New York, and later to New Hartford, near Utica. He had a son Augustus. Rena had a son Harmon and a grandson Augustus - names that don't seem to run in Silas Wheelock's side of the family. But The Baldwin Genealogy does not show a child of Heman named Rene, Rena, or Irene, and does not give a marriage date for Heman and his wife Irene. Her gravestone implies she was born circa 1760, suggesting a marriage date in the range of 1778 to 1790. The first child listed on FamilySearch.org is Polly, born 1792. Rine Baldwin, mentioned above, was a cousin of Heman.

Elizabeth Marian Thompson

Birth: 6 Apr 1859, Attleboro, Bristol Co, MA

Death: 19 Oct 1917, Manhattan, NY, NY

Spouse: George Rogers Wheelock
Marriage: 14 Jul 1887, Attleboro, Bristol Co, MA

Notes:

She was a teacher, the daughter of John N. Thompson and Mary Hepburn. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to California for his health. After his death, she continued her career as a teacher, joining the faculty of the Horace Mann School of Teachers' College in New York City. She was a writer of ability, and published a volume of Wagner opera stories for children.1

She and her husband had one child that apparently did not live (per 1900 census).

Research Notes:

Her marriage record identifies her as a teacher, the daughter of John and Mary Thompson, age 28, born in Attleboro.

An Elizabeth M. Wheelock, school teacher, born Apr 1859 in Massachusetts, widow, was boarding in Malden, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, per 1900 census. In 1910 she was living in Manhattan, Ward 12.

Her Manhattan death record identifies her parents as John N. Thompson and Mary Hepburn, both born in Scotland. Her funeral service was held at Forest Hills Cemetery chapel.
