Weltha Adaline Horr

Birth: 30 Aug 1796, MA

Death: 27 Sep 1890, Pymosa Township, Cass Co, IA

Father: William Horr
Mother: Ruth Forbes

Spouse: Asa Wheelock
Marriage: about 1816/17

  1. Adaline Lodica Wheelock, born 9 Feb 1818, Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co, NY
  2. William Asa Wheelock, born 5 Nov 1823, Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co, NY
  3. Laura Louise Wheelock, born 23 Oct 1826, Cape Vincent, NY
  4. Alberto Wheelock, born about 1829, Cape Vincent, NY
  5. Oscar Uberto Wheelock, born 6 Sep 1830, Lyme, Jefferson, NY
  6. Andrew Jackson Wheelock, born 22 Dec 1832, Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co, NY
  7. Mary Amelia Wheelock, born 1 Oct 1835, Cape Vincent, NY
  8. Serepta A. Wheelock, born 27 Jun 1839, Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co, NY

Notes:

Weltha lived in Stockton for many years after her husband died. For most of that time she lived in the household of her daughter, Mary Biddleman, with a brief interlude living in the household of her grand-daughter, Martha (Perry) Batchelder. After the 1880 census was taken she moved to Pymosa Township, Cass County, Iowa, where she was living with her daughter, Mary, in 1885.1

In 1868 she applied for and received a pension based on the service of her son, Alberto Wheelock, who had been captured during the Civil War, and died in Andersonville Prison.2

She died in 1890 in Pymosa Township.3

Research Notes:

There are several statements in her obituary and her pension application that contradict what are thought to be the facts of her life.

Her obituary states that she had eleven children (six sons and five daughters) while only eight are accounted for here and in other genealogies. Her statement, filed under oath, in support of her pension application states that she married her husband, Asa Wheelock, on 6 March 1811. The application is labelled "original" in the pension packet, and is therefore presumably not a transcription. It was signed by Weltha Wheelock, and witnessed by her daughter, Adaline Lodica (Wheelock) Perry, and her husband, Henry A. Perry. The date is clearly written and not subject to misreading. If this date were accurate, it would imply that Cyrus Hubbard Wheelock was her son, which seems unlikley. The marriage date is contradicted by the statement in her obituary that three sons survived her. If Cyrus were her son, then four sons would have survived her (they being William, Oscar, Andrew, and Cyrus). One possible explanation is that Weltha herself misremembered the date. Another is that the document in her pension packet is, in fact, not original (even though it looks authentic), and is instead a mistaken transcription of an original document. It is possible that her actual marriage date is 6 March 1817.

Her obituary in the Atlantic Telegraph, 1 Oct 1890, states that she was born in Boston, Massachusetts; but her parents were married and lived in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. It is more likely that she was born there rather than Boston. She may be the Weltha Hor whose birth is recorded in Attleboro (next to Rehoboth), 30 Aug 17??, daughter of William Hor.4

Homer was elected an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Orchard Park in 1838, along with Richard Smith and David C. Hough. Homer's parents, Silas and Rena, were both founding members of this church when it was first organized in 1817.1

Homer was a resident of Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York, on 4 Feb 1849 when he jointly purchased land in Dayton with his brother, Joseph Wheelock.2 In 1850, Homer, Joseph, and their respective families were living in the same dwelling in Dayton.

In 1860 and 1865 Homer and family were again in Dayton; by 1870 they were living in Pomfret, Chautauqua County.

His death notice in The Fredonia Censor reads as follows:4 "Died, In Dunkirk, March 28, 1887, Mr. Homer Wheelock, in his 74th year. Funeral Thursday, at the house, one o'clock; burial at Forest Hill. Mr. Wheelock was a respected citizen of Pomfret some twenty years. He leaves a wife and seven children, three sons and four daughters, all grown to maturity. Mr. Z. E.
