Notes:

Andrew Jackson Wheelock was born 22 Dec 1832 in Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York, son of Asa Wheelock and Waltha Adaline Horr. He spent his youth in Jefferson County. Later, in the summer and early fall of 1853, he travelled in the Mormon wagon train company of his half-brother, Cyrus H. Wheelock, bound from Lee County, Iowa to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah.1 He was probably the Andrew Wheelock living in Lehi, Utah County, Utah when the 1856 Utah census was taken.2

Sometime later he returned to Stockton, Jo Daviess County where, during the Civil War, he enlisted in the army on 4 Sep 1861 for a three year term. He served first in Company A, Fremonts Rangers, Illinois,6 and then in Company G, 3rd Regiment Missouri Cavalry, where he spent most of his war career.3 He served in various capacities during the war including as a nurse at a Small Pox Hospital, clerk at Provost Marshal's office, and as a stable guard.4 He was promoted to Sergeant on 20 Sep 1862.5

He married Mary Carlton probably around 1865.7 The couple was in Iowa Falls, Hardin Co, Iowa in 1866, where their first child was born,8 and in Wisconsin in 1867, where their second child was born.9 After that they settled in Stockton where he remained for the rest of his life.

On 1 Aug 1890 he made application for and later received an 'invalid pension' for his Civil War service (for being incapacitated, sick, or disabled).10

In 1892, his 24 year old daughter Georgia went on a trip to Chicago, where she suddenly fell ill. On January 26th of that year, a telegram was sent to her parents in Illinois, requesting both to come immediately. Andrew boarded the next train. When he arrived, his daughter was unconscious, unable to recognize anyone. At one particularly poignant point, though, she opened her eyes, saw her father, and said "pa". She died a few hours later.11

Per obituary, he was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Masons, and the Universalist church in Stockton. He died in his home after a short illness on 24 Dec 1902.12

On 5 Jan 1903, his wife filed for and received a widows pension for Andrew's Civil War service.10

Research Notes:

He is listed in the Index to Compiled MIlitary Service Records, GAR Dept of Illinois, Death Rolls. He enlisted 1 Oct 1861 in St. Louis, Missouri, private, Company G, 3rd Missouri Cavalry. He survived the war and died 24 Dec 1902.13

He is enumerated in the 1880 U.S. census in Stockton, Jo Daviess Co, Illinois, A. J. Wheelock, 48, farmer, born New York, with his wife, Mary, 42, born Ohio, Lottie, daughter, age 13, born Iowa, Annie, daughter, age 11, born Wisconsin, Guy, son, age 10, born Illinois, Mark, son, age 6, born Illinois, and Edna, 1, daughter, born Illinois.

He is enumerated in the 1900 U.S. census in Stockton, Jo Daviess Co, Illinois, A. J. Wheelock, born Dec 1832, New York, married 35 years, with his wife Mary, born April 1837 in Ohio, married 35 years. Mary had 5 children of whom 4 were surviving when the census was taken. Also in the household was Guy A. Wheelock, son, born Nov 1869 in Illinois, single, carpenter, and Edna Wheelock, daughter, born Oct 1878 in Illinois, single, milliner.

His obituary was published in the Galena Daily Gazette (Galena, Illinois), 3 Jan 1903. He left two daughters, Miss Edna Wheelock at home, Mrs. Hopkins "of this township [Stockton]," another daughter preceded him in death, and two sons, M. O. Wheelock of Iowa, and Guy Wheelock, of New Castle, Wyoming.

Buried next to Andrew Jackson Wheelock in Ladies Union Cemetery, Stockton, IL is Georgia A. Wheelock, 17 Dec 1867 - 27 Jan 1892.
