Per marriage announcement, Susie M. Burrows was a resident of Fredonia when she married Albert Wheelock there in 1886, at the residence of Anna Jones. She is no doubt the Susie Burrows, age 24, servant, living in the household of Darwin and Sarah Shephard in Fredonia in 1880.

She died 15 May 1927 at the home of her nephew, William H. Wheelock, in Dunkirk.¹

Birth Date and Parentage:

Though direct evidence has not been found, her parents were most likely Arvis and Rebecca Burrows, of Allegany County, New York.

Susan M. Burrows can be found in the 1850 through 1875 U.S. and New York census records living in West Almond, Alma, Friendship, Amity, and Scio, all in Allegany County, with her father Arvis, who died in 1871, and her mother Rebecca, who died after the 1900 census was taken. Susan's age in most of these records imply a birth in Allegany County circa 1844-1845. But after 1875, a Susan M. Burrows born in that time frame was not found in New York state. Instead, Susie Burrows, age about ten years younger appears in Fredonia in 1880. In subsequent census records, she is called Susie or Susan Wheelock, sometime with the middle initial M; her birth date in these records fluctuates between 1852 and 1860. Her gravestone is inscribed with a birth date of 1862.

The likely explanation for these discrepancies is that Susan liked to peel years off her age.

Her obit indicates she was born in Wellsville, Allegany County, New York, 1 Apr 1855.¹ The Forest Hill Cemetery records in Fredonia, on the other hand, list a birth date of 1 Apr 1845.² The latter is more likely correct.

Alden D. Wheelock at age 39, 6 feet 2 1/2 inches, dark complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair, born in Bakersfield, VT, occupation - mason enlisted in Company I, 10th Regement Vermont Infantry August 13, 1862 in Fairfield, VT for a term of 3 years. He was mustered in as a private at Brattleboro, VT Sept. 1,1862. He was listed as absent sick in General Hospital since Dec.13, 1862. He was discharged Feb. 10, 1863 at Brattleboro, VT, for a small hernia on the left side.¹
