According to Howe Genealogies, Fanny Howe was the wife of Laban Marcy, Esq., of Greenwich, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.¹ Fanny Howe and Laban Marcy, Esq, both of Greenwich, filed intentions there on 22 June 1811.²

Fanny (Howe) Marcy died in Greenwich, 23 July 1857, aged 65 years and 8 days. Per death record, she was born in Sturbridge, MA; but no parents are listed on the record.³ Her birth date, calculated from age at death, would have been 15 July 1792.

There are a few reasons to be suspicious of the assertion that Fanny Howe, daughter of Jabez and Relief (Wheelock) Howe, is the same Fanny that married Laban Marcy in Greenwich.

First, it seems likely that Fanny, being only eight years old, would have gone with the rest of the family to Augusta, NY, in 1800.

Second, Fanny's birth date (15 July 1792), calculated from her death record, does not match the birth date given for her in Howe Genealogies (5 Apr 1791).¹

Thirdly, Fanny Marcy was not mentioned in the list of heirs of Jabez Howe published in the 12 Sep 1851 edition of the Albany Argus. Fanny would have been alive in 1851. Many of her siblings were mentioned, including Sally Lusk and her husand, Salmon Lusk; Minerva Holmes of Adrian, Michigan; Asa Howe of Ann Harbor [sic] Michigan; and Louisa Wallace and her husband Ira Wallace of Albion, Michigan. It is not surprising that Fanny was missing from the will of Jabez Howe - most of his children were missing from the will. But it is unexpected for her to be missing from the probate notice, which was published to notify all heirs and next of kin of a court hearing to approve the will.⁴

There is another, unrelated issue with Fanny. Assuming their birth dates are correct, Relief would have been only 13 years old when Fanny was born. Technically possible, but well outside the statistical norm. Also, a 4 1/2 year gap between Fanny, and the next born, Asa, is suspicious. Perhaps Howe Genealogies has it wrong - Fanny may not be a child of Jabez and Relief.
