Relief Wheelock

Birth: 2 Sep 1777, Charlton, Worcester Co, MA

Father: Edward Wheelock
Mother: Martha Daggett

Spouse: Jabez Howe
Marriage:

  1. Fanny Howe, born 5 Apr 1791
  2. Asa Howe, born 16 Oct 1795
  3. Emmons Howe, born 3 Aug 1797
  4. Sally Howe, born 10 Jun 1799
  5. Harley Howe, born 18 Mar 1801
  6. Minerva Howe, born 13 Dec 1802
  7. Louisa Howe, born 4 Jul 1805
  8. Russell Howe, born 3 Oct 1807
  9. Sally Howe, born 7 Jun 1819, Batavia, Genesee Co, NY

Notes:

Relief Wheelock (or at least her daughter Sally) is placed in Batavia in the early 1800s by the following quote from the Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, NY, 1788-1890:1

"Salmon B. Lusk was born in Poultney, August, 28, 1815, came to Batavia, and married Sally, daughter of Jabez and Relief (Wheelock) Howe, and their children are Althea, Elizabeth, Helen, Mary, Frank R., Clara E., and William B."

The Relief referenced in this quote is almost certainly the daughter of Edward and Martha (Daggett) Wheelock of Charlton, Massachusetts, and later Augusta, New York. Though no direct documentary proof has been found, the following points support the claim:

(1) Jabez Howe was born and lived in Sturbridge, MA, adjacent to Charlton where Relief was born. He and his brother, Elias, went to Augusta, Oneida County, New York in approximately the same time frame as Edward and Martha (Daggett) Wheelock.2

(2) Reliefs brother, Reu, also lived in Batavia, in a lot adjacent to Jabez, and had a son named Emmons Howe Wheelock.3 Relief had a son named Emmons Howe.2

(3) Other members of Relief's family were known to be living in Batavia, including her brothers Silas (who had a son, Lewis, there), and (likely) Eli, who is buried there.

(4) In addition, a John Wheelock, born in Massachusetts about 1792, was living in Batavia with Relief's daughter, Sally (Howe) Lusk, per 1850 and 1860 U.S. census. John was likely a close relative of Relief.

Despite this evidence, it is problematic that Relief would have been only 13 when she gave birth to her first child, Fanny. For a possible explanation, see the notes for Fanny.

Relief was alive on 4 Mar 1812, when she signed a deed with her husband, selling land in Augusta to David Fairchild.4

She had died by 17 June 1846, when Jabez Howe sold land to John Kilborn of Batavia, for $1. The deed was signed by his wife, Martha.5
