Louisa Howe

Birth: 4 Jul 1805

Death: 28 Apr 1852

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Albion, Calhoun Co, MI

Father: Jabez Howe
Mother: Relief Wheelock

Spouse: Ira Wallace
Marriage: 17 Apr 1826, Batavia, Genesee Co, NY

Notes:

Louisa Howe is presumed to be the Louisa Olds who married Ira Wallace 17 Apr 1826 in Batavia, based on the probate notice for her father that listed Louisa Wallace of Albion, MIchigan, wife of Ira, as an heir of Jabez Howe.1

Perhaps Hamilton Olds of Batavia who died in Buffalo, 3 Feb 1825, aged 23, was her first husband.2

Louisa Wallace was enumerated in the 1850 census living in Albion, Calhoun Co, MI, age 45, born NY, with her husband Ira Wallace, age 49, cooper, born in Canada, and her children Hilson Wallace, age 14, born NY, Jabez Wallace, 6, Rosalta Wallace, 4, and Franklin Wallace, 1, all born in Michigan.

Notes:

Research Notes:

One of the copies of Gilbert Leonards death record identifies his wife as Eliza Sayles. Eliza was his first wife, having died 18 years earlier, so this must have been a mistake. The evidence that Eliza was his first wife consists of (1) her 1824 Calais death record (Eliza Sayles Leonard) identifying Gilbert Leonard as her husband, and (2) the fact that he named his first daughter Eliza Sayles Leonard. This is supported by a reference to Eliza Sayles as his first wife in Gazetteer of Washington County, Vt, 1783-1889, Part First, by Hamilton Child, p. 235.

William Efner Wheelock

Birth: 20 Jul 1842, Holland, Erie, NY

Death: 21 Feb 1902, Lubbock, Lubbock, TX

Burial: City of Lubbock Cemetery, Lubbock, Lubbock Co, TX

Father: William Wheelock
Mother: Catherine Cordelia Morey

Spouse: Louisa Diane Farrington
Marriage: 24 Aug 1862, Holland, Erie Co, NY

  1. Frank Emerson Wheelock, born 11 Apr 1863, Holland, Erie Co, NY
  2. William Ava Wheelock, born 30 Jan 1865, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

William Efner Wheelock was a graduate physician of the Eclectic School of Medicine.1 After the death of his wife, Dr. Wheelock moved from Holland, New York, to Madison, Wisconsin, where he was found in the 1870 census living with his mother, and his two children, Frank and William. His occupation was listed as farmer.

On 12 Oct 1877 her purchased his mother's farm in Madison, and the next month (23 Nov 1877) sold it.2 It is probably about this time that his mother moved back to Moline, Illinois.

According to family records, he later moved to North Dakota, where he bought a farm.3 In 1880 he was probably the W. E. Wheelock, age 40, born New York, widower, living in Walshville, Grand Forks County, Dakota Territory. At the time, his son Frank was living with his uncle, L. P. Wheelock, and William Ava was living with his uncle Stillman W. Wheelock, both in Moline.

The children spent summers with him in North Dakota. But during the school term, Frank stayed with his uncle (Jerome Wheelock) in Madison, and William Ava stayed with another uncle in Moline, Illinois.

In 1900 he invested in The Corning Oil and Gas Company, which was organized in late 1900 near Corning, Tehama County, California. William E. Wheelock was a director, and elected vice-president. The plan was to drill a well near Corning, in search of oil.4 Per 1900 census, he was a boarder in Corning. After years of effort, no substantial pocket of oil was found.5

When failure was evident, he moved to Lubbock, Texas, to live with his son, Frank Emerson Wheelock. While there he committed suicide.6
