Notes:

Jabez Howe, son of Ebenezer, was born 17 Jan 1771 in Sturbridge, Mass. He with his brother Elias, went to New York State, and settled in Augusta, Oneida Co, about 1800, but they did not make a long stay, as he later settled in Batavia, Genesee Co, where he was living in 1850.¹

He is enumerated in Augusta, Oneida Co, in 1800, living next to his brother Elias, with two male children under 10, one female child under 10, and a woman, 16 to 26 years old.

In 1820 he was in Batavia, enumerated next to Asa Howe and Harley Howe. He was age 45 and above, with a female 26 to 44 (Relief would have been 43). Also in the household was another man 45 and above, a male under 10 (unknown), a male 10 to 15 (Russell was 13), a female under 10 (possibly the second Sally), and a female 10-15 (Louisa was 15).

In 1830 he was 50 to 60, living in Batavia, with a woman between 50 and 60 (Relief would have been 53, Martha 46). Also in the household: a male 5 to 10 (unknown), a male 80 to 89 (perhaps his father, who died 31 Dec 1834, aged 87), and a female aged 10 to 15 (the second Sally would have been 10). Also in Batavia in 1830 was Russell Howe, Asa Howe, Harley Howe, William Howe, and John W Howe [son of John and Esther (Waller) Howe, of Litchfield, Conn, per profile on FamilySearch].

The 1820 and 1830 census records suggest Jabez and Sally had children born after Russell Howe, who was the last child listed in Howe Genealogies.

In 1850 he was living in Batavia, aged 79, with Martha, age 66.

A probate notice in the Albany Argus (Albany, New York), dated 9 August 1851, lists the heirs and next of kin of Jabez Howe: Marth Howe, widow; Sally Lusk and her husband, Salmon B. Lusk; Mary Ann [daughter of Harley], and her husband, Ebenezer Ferrin; George W. Alieu(?), special guardian of Thaddeus C. Harley Jr. [could this be Thaddeus C. Howe, son of Harley?], and William Howe [son of Harley], infants; all of Batavia, Genesee County, NY; Minerva Holmes, of Adrian, Michigan; Asa Howe, of Ann Harbor [sic], Michigan; Russell Howe, of Munroe City, Michigan; Louisa Wallace, and her husband Ira Wallace, of Albion, Michigan; Relief Webb [daughter of Harley], of Batavia, and Helen [daughter of Harley], and her huband Alfred Leggeth, of Attica, Wyoming County, NY.²

Notes:

Benajah Wheelock came to Wisconsin with his parents prior to 1850. He worked as a lumberman in the Green Bay area during the 1850's and is said to have started one of the first sawmills north of Green Bay. In Feb 1859 he left Wisconsin to join his parents in California. His wife, Matilda stayed behind with the three children. She later filed for divorce, claiming that he had failed to send support money. The divorce was granted in 1861. Sometime after his marriage to Mary Drever, he took up farming on a ranch near Rough and Ready Creek in Sonora. The ranch, however, was not productive, and after borrowing money to make ends meet, he eventually lost it. In 1890 he filed a quart claim ten miles east of Sonora. Probate records for his estate (#888) are on file at the County Clerk, Tuolomne County, Sonora, CA.
