Vinal L. Morey of Kankakee, Illinois, made his will on 10 Aug 1896, a few months after his son died. In it, he left bequests to his nice, Mrs. Lydia Tosier of Pennsylvania; his nephews, Erasmus Morey of Pennsylvania, Wallace W. Gelatt of Chicago; Jane Morey of Chicago; his brother Leonard Morey of Lafayette, Indiana; his nephew W. W. Morey of Kankakee, Illinois; his nieces Jennie Wright of Chicago, Mrs. Anner Axtell, Mrs. Amand M. Phelps, Emeline Morey, and Lucy Morey; his nephew Oscar R. Morey; and the following people, to whom his relationship was not specified: Guy M. Phelps, Albert E. Morey, Mrs Mabel Cracraft(?), Rev. W. H. Prestley, and Mrs. Julia L. Smith of Grant Park, Illinois.

Also, bequests were made to Daniel Larkin of Madison, WIsconsin; and the Holland Cemetery Association in Erie County, New York.

The remainder of his estate was left to his grand daughter, Mira Morey.1

He went by the name Ordway Calvin Wheelock. He grew up in Morristown, and went to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in the spring of 1856. He was employed as a clerk in the old City Hotel in Stevens Point, then ran a stage line from 1858 to 1862. He later became engaged in the mercantile business, then lumbering and livery. In Dec 1859 he married Amanda Sturtevant. While a resident of Stevens Point, he served as mayor, alderman, supervisor, assessor, and member and president of the Board of Education. He died on 3 Apr 1895 at his home in Stevens Point. He was survived by his wife, two children, Edward Bradley Wheelock, and Addie O. Wheelock. A third child predeceased him. He also left behind one brother, Winslow Wheelock, and one sister, Mrs. Dr. Brewer of Montpelier, VT.1

Luke Wheelock

Another source indicates a birth date of 22 Apr 1806.

Luke Wheelock may have lived in Buffalo, NY, where his oldest son was born, before moving to Northeastern Wisconsin prior to 1850. There he worked as a lumberman in the area north of Green Bay. In 1852 he moved to Sonora, CA, along with his wife and daughter. In Sep 1852 they purchased property in Sonora known as the Miners House, from John Wedlock. On 1 June 1853, the Sonora Herald carried an article with the following headline: "Wheelock - and elderly miner at Dragoon Gulch is making 2-6 ounces per day for the past three weeks." Luke Wheelock was the 89th citizen of Tuolomne County to be listed in the Great Register of voters when he registered on 24 July 1866. His occupation was listed as wagonmaker.

Luke and Mary Jane Wheelock are both buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at San Franciso, CA, which has since been removed to Colma, CA. Probate records for Luke (Estate #375) and Mary Jane (Estate #892) are found in the office of the County Clerk, Tuolumne County, Sonora, CA.
