Lyman Wheelock

Birth: 30 Nov 1761, Mendon, Worcester Co, MA

Death: 29 Mar 1848

Burial: Pratt Cemetery, Rt. 138, Easton, MA

Father: Jonathan Wheelock
Mother: Ruth Daniels

Spouse: Mercy Williams
Marriage: 7 Sep 1783, Ashfield, MA

  1. Daniel Williams Wheelock, born 9 Oct 1784, Easton, Bristol Co, MA
  2. Rebecca Wheelock, born 21 Jul 1786, Easton, Bristol Co, MA
  3. Lyman Wheelock, born 10 Nov 1788, Easton, Bristol Co, MA
  4. Susanna Wheelock, born 1 Sep 1791, Easton, Bristol Co, MA

Notes:

Lyman fought in the Revolutionary War, as did his brothers, Eleazar and (probably) Alpheus. He enlisted at the age of 17 in 1778, and served in Colonel Ezra Wood's Regiment. After the war, he settled in Easton, MA.

The "History of Easton", William L. Chaffin, 1886, has this to say about Lyman's homestead:

"If we pass down the track to Short Street, go to the little cemetery on that street and take the lane leading northward from that spot, we shall find, after a quarter of a mile's walk, the Lyman Wheelock place, one of the most conspicuous ruins in town. The location, though not very elevated, is a beautiful one, from it one may command quite an extended view. Here lived Lyman Wheelock, the Revolutionary soldier and pensioner, who at one time kept an inn. The lane that ran by his house crossed the stream not far from the Macombers at South Easton, and led over what is known to have been an ancient dam called the Scotch dam."

The location of Lyman's home was no doubt on present day Lyman Wheelock Drive.

The children shown here (Lyman, Daniel, Rebecca, and Susan) are taken from "Wheelock Genealogy", by Carlyle Capron Wheelock and Winifred (Thomson) Gonseth, 1955; confirmed by the Easton town records, and by a note written in hand by Benjamin N. Langston in 1881. Benjamin was the husband of Lyman's granddaughter, Rebecca Wheelock. The note is preserved and in the posession of Robert Wheelock, of Ohio, Aug. 2000.

Lyman is buried in the Pratt Cemetery, on Rt. 138 in Easton, MA. No other Wheelock stones are present in that cemetery.

Lyman shares a headstone with his wife, Mercy. The headstone states that he was age 86 when he died in 1848. According to "The History of Easton", by W. L. Chaffin, 1886, he died in 1846, age 86. But this is not consistent with his birth date in the Mendon Vital Records, nor is it consistent with his heastone.

Lyman's sons, Daniel and Lyman, Jr. moved to Ohio in the 1805 time frame.

"TEAGUE - Died, near Pleasant Hill, Miami County Ohio, December 8th, 1868, Susan Teague, wife of John Teague, in her 45th year. After taking an affectionate farewell of her husband, five children, and other relatives, and friends, she fell asleep in Jesus.
