No birth record has been found for Joseph W. Wheelock. However, the birth of Winslow Wheelock in Eden, son of Martin and Rachel, is recorded in the Vermont Vital Records, 24 Jan 1825. This record conflicts with the birth of another Winslow Wheelock in Eden, 25 Oct 1818, son of Martin and Rachel, who lived to maturity and died in Morristown, Lamoille Co, Vermont, leaving it open to question who the 24 Jan 1825 Winslow was. [There is also a record of another Winslow, born 24 Aug 1820. This is presumed to be Abigail, see notes for Winslow Wheelock, b. 1818.]

The birth date for Joseph W. Wheelock is inscribed on his gravestone - 24 Jan 1825, suggesting that the Winslow Wheelock, born 24 Jan 1825 was actually Joseph. The middle name Wilson is also inscribed on the gravestone.

Joseph W. Wheelock must have been a town clerk in Berlin, as his signature appears on many of the vital records there in the 1870s. He was an editor per his Berlin death record. He had a one-half interest in the "Green Mountain Freeman" in 1869, and owned all of it in 1873. His son, Herbert R. Wheelock, later published the paper, which was located in Montpelier, VT.¹
