Edwin left Vermont in 1854 with his father. They settled in Illinois.

Edwin joined the Union Cavalry in 1863, at the young age of 16. He severed 9 months at the close of the Civil War, fighting Indians. He left the military in 1866, returning to live with his parents in South Minnesota, where he found his life partner, Eliza McClelland of Maine.

The Minnesota Vital Records give the marriage date as 8 Apr 1869 in some records, and as 10 Apr 1869 in other records.

In 1878 the family moved to Codington County, South Dakota. Edwin and his brother Moses were lumbermen. Edwin later became a postmaster, taught school, was chosen a county commissioner (9 yrs), and briefly a state senator in 1894.

Though two different birth records with different birth dates (1882 and 1883) for Alfred Wheelock can be found in the South Dakota Index to Births, it seems unlikely that these are two separate people as shown here. Since the 1900 Census shows only one Alfred Wheelock in the family, born Apr 1883, the 1882 birth date is probably in error.
