Notes:

Josephine Ayers married Herbert M. Smith in Mayville, New York, 23 Mar 1923. The couple lived in Mayville until at least 1932 when the newspapers report that they were rescued from a fire there. By 1936 Josephine had married George G. Wheelock, living in Jamestown where she is listed as his wife in the 1936 Jamestown directory.

In 1940 Josephine, 36, born Tennessee, and George G. Wheelock, 56, born Pennsylvania, were living in Celoron (on the west boundary of Jamestown).

George G. Wheelock died 4 Aug 1955 in Jamestown. His obituary states that his survivors included his wife, Josephine Ayers Wheelock of Jamestown, and his step son, Thom H. Smith of Kiantone.¹

According to her obit, Josephine then married Charles Lusk, who died in 1960.

She managed the Chautauqua County Humane Society in Falconer for many years.

Josephine died 15 June 1986 at the Corry Manor Nursing Home in Corry, Pennsylvania. Her obituary identifies the following survivors: her son, Tom Smith of Jamestown; six grandchildren: Bonnie Kitch, Marcia Babcock, Daryl Dallas, Rick, and Kim Smith, all of Frewsburg, and Kerry Smith of Gerry; 12 great grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, James Ayers; and a sister, Annie Lane, both of Chattanooga.²

Research Notes for Josephine:

She is called Josephine Ayers Wheelock of Jamestown in George G. Wheelock's obituary, dated 4 Aug 1955, which also refers to his step-son, Tom H. Smith, of Kiantone.

In 1920, Josephine Ayers, age 15, was living in Chattanooga Ward 5, Hamilton County, Tennessee with her parents, Lucius W. Ayers and his wife Katie.

On 23 Mar 1923, Josephine Ayers married Herbert M. Smith in Mayville. Her parents were identiied as Lucina [sic] W. Ayers and Katie Hampton.³.

In 1930, Josephine Smith, age 26, born Tennessee, was living in Mayville, the wife of Herbert M. Smith, photo artist, age 62, born New York. They had a son, Thomas H. Smith, 5, born in Tennessee.

On 6 Feb 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert M. Smith, and their small son, about 6, were rescued from a fire in Mayville.⁴

In 1934, George G. Wheelock was a salesman living in Jamestown. In 1936, he was a driver in Jamestown, living at 70 /1/2 Forest Avenue, with his wife, Josephine.⁵ No marriage record has yet been found.

In 1940 Herbert M. Smith, widowed [sic], age 61, born New York, was renting in Mayville, with his son, Tom H. Smith, age 14.

In 1940 Josephine Wheelock, age 36, born Tennessee, was living in Celoron, Chautauqua County, New York, with her husband George G. Wheelock, age 56, born Pennsylvania. Per census, in 1935 Josephine was living in Mayville, and George was living in Jamestown.

Neither she nor George has yet been found in the 1950 census.

Her Find A Grave memorial states that she was born 20 Feb 1902 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, died 18 June 1986 in Corry, Erie County, New York, buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Lakewood. After George G. Wheelock died, she married ____ Lusk.⁶
