The parentage of Benjamin Gray is based on the following:

1) His Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts birth record, identifying him as the son of John and Mary Gray, closely matches his age at death (though not exact).

2) The pension application filed by John Gray's second wife, Sally Gray, contains affidavits of multiple people who indicate that they lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts (adjacent to Dartmouth), within one mile of John Gray during the Revolutionary War.

3) The pension application contains an affidavit written by Gideon Wheelock of Calais, stating that he personally performed the marriage ceremony for John Gray, of Montpelier, and Sally Wheelock, of Calais, in Calais on 6 Oct 1823.¹

4) The widower of Olive, Lydia's sister, married Sally Gray, daughter of John Gray and Mary Barker (per Sally's death record).

These facts make clear that John Gray used to live in or near New Bedford, consistent with his son's birth in Dartmouth. Per U.S. census, in 1790, John Gray lived in New Bedford, with a family of 9. In 1800 he no longer appears in New Bedford, but instead a John Gray appears in Montpelier, with a family of size 10.

There is presumably a 20 Oct 1794 Washington County, Vermont deed proving that John Gray, of New Bedford, Bristol County, MA bought a piece of land in what is now East Montpelier (per FindAGrave memorial 136936226 for John Gray). This would be fully consistent with the marriage of his son, Benjamin, in Calais in 1798.

These facts also make clear that John Gray and his family had connections with the Wheelock family of Calais.
