She is referred to as Zilpha Stockwell in the 1875 probate records of her aunt, Laura Wheelock. She is almost certainly the Zilpha Stockwell, enumerated in the 1870 census, living in Plainview, Wabasha Co, MN, age 54, born Vermont, wife of Sylvester Stockwell, 54, also born in Vermont. She is enumerated in the 1900 census, living again in Plainview, widowed, born Nov 1815 in Vermont, parents born in Massachusetts.

She and her husband are enumerated in the 1855 MA state census, living in Lowell, Middlesex Co, both age 30 to 40, with their presumed daughter Mary, age under 5. Sylvester and Zilpha were received into the Worthen St. Methodist Episcopal Church in Lowell on 3 May 1854, and left 25 Mar 1856, "gone west - Minnesota" according to the remarks on the record. Given their residence in Lowell, it is plausible that both their children were born there.¹

By 1857 they had moved to Minnesota, where they are enumerated in the Minnesota Territorial census living in Township 108, Range 10, Winona, Minnesota, Zilpha age 41, Sylvester 42, both born in Vermont, with Mary, age 6, and John, age 5, both born in Massachusetts.

They are enumerated in the 1860 census living in Township 108, Range 11, Plainview, Wabasha, MN, both age 44, with their daughter, Mary E. Stockwell, age 9, born in Massachusetts. John, who would have been about 8, is not listed, presumably deceased.

They are not found in the 1865 census, but in 1870 they are living again in Plainview, both age 54, born Vermont, no children.

Sylvester and Zilpha are enumerated in the 1875 Minnesota state census, again in Plainview, both age 59, born Vermont, with Mary E. Bates, age 24, born in Massachusetts, and her presumed daughter, Hattie D. Bates, age 6, born in Minnesota.

Sylvester dissapeared from the census records after that date. In 1880, Zilpha is living with her daughter, Mary Bates, age 29, born Massachusetts, and her son in law, John M. Bates, age 40, born in Ohio. Her granddaughter, Hattie Bates, age 11, born Minnesota is also in the household.

According to Minnesota and U.S. census records, she was living with her daughter in 1885, 1895, and 1900, but appears in no census records after that. She is not in the 1905 Minnesota state census, suggesting that she died between 1900 and 1905.
