Paul Wheelock

Birth: 8 Mar 1785, Charlton, Worcester Co, MA

Death: 27 Feb 1833, Charlestown, Suffolk Co, MA

Burial: Kings Chapel Burying Ground, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA

Father: Paul Wheelock
Mother: Beulah Johnson

Partner: Betsy Converse

  1. Paul Wheelock, born about 1807

Spouse: Parmelia W. Davenport
Marriage: 11 Nov 1810, Portsmouth, NH

Notes:

Paul was born 8 March 1785 in Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, the son of Paul Wheelock and Beulah Johnson.1 In early 1807 he had an out of wedlock child with his cousin, Betsey Converse.2 To note the occassion, Betsy's sister, Polly (Converse) Wheelock, wrote this diary entry on 11 March 1807: "Betsy had a fine boy born, with but little difficulty thank to God the giver of good and evil too."

From Polly's diary, it is evident that Paul had a difficult time in his youth. On 16 March 1806 (months before Betsy became pregnant) she visited Paul and wrote that she "found him poorly enough". A month later she made a similar entry, stating that he "was very much cast down and quite unwell." Shortly after word got out that Betsy was pregnant, Polly penned the following diary entry (on 23 Oct 1806): "I heard about Betsy Converse. Very disagreeable indeed." Three days later she wrote "Paul Wheelock ran away." More than a year passed before she wrote "Paul Wheelock returned."3

Paul later went to Boston and established permanent residence there. He was "of Boston" on 11 Nov 1810 when he married Pemelia W. Davenport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, daughter of Mr. John Davenport of that town. He was called Paul Jr. in the marriage announcement.4 The 1823 Boston directory lists his occupation as hackman (driver of a hack or taxi).5 By 1831 he operated a livery stable.6 He was executor of Ziba Crosby's estate, and was called a stable keeper in the probate petition, dated 31 Oct 1831.7

Paul died in the McLean Institution, a psychiatric hospital in Charlestown, 27 Feb 1833, aged 48 years.8 His widow, Pamelia W. Wheelock was administrator of his estate. Two of the largest creditors paid out of the estate were Ephraim and Martin Wheelock, no doubt his brothers. She also made a payment to the McLean Asylum for the Insane.9

Research Notes for Paul Wheelock:

The following facts about Paul Wheelock, Jr. of Boston, connect him to the Paul Wheelock born in Charlton:

  1. His father's name was evidently Paul, based on the use of Jr. in multiple announcements of his marriage in the newspapers.
  2. He was born circa 1785, based on his age at death.10
  3. Per probate records, he apparently borrowed relatively large sums of money from both Ephraim and Martin Wheelock.
  4. Based on his death in the McLean Asylum, he evidently had psychological issues, as did the Paul in Charlton, based on his cousin's diary. His out of wedlock son, Paul 3rd (aka John Adams Wheelock), may also have had psychological problems, based on his cause of death which was listed as "insanity".11
  5. Abigail (Wheelock) King, older sister of Martin, Ephraim, and Paul Wheelock, named a daughter Pamelia Davenport King, possibly after Paul's wife (see notes for Pamelia, born 1812 in Leicester).

There are a few facts that might argue against the connection between Paul Jr. of Boston and Paul of Charlton:

  1. One of the guardianship documents for Paul's out of wedlock son, dated 16 Jan 1822, refers to his father as "Paul Wheelock late of Charlton decd", implying Paul of Charlton died well before 1833, when Paul, Jr. of Boston died.12 But the other facts connecting Paul, Jr. of Boston to Paul of Charlton are felt to be too strong to give credence to the guardianship document. In 1822 Paul had been living in Boston for at least 12 years. It is possible some members of the community did not know where he was or whether he was still alive. He had possibly "run off" to Boston, and it may have been months or years before it became widely known where he went or whether he was still alive. Or it is possible that family members (or at least the informant to the probate judge) simply preferred to consider Paul Jr. of Boston as deceased - perhaps more socially acceptable or legally expedient given the situation. Or, it is possible the probate judge simply made a slip of hand - Paul, the father, was certainly "late of Charlton", but not "decd".
  2. Paul's out of wedlock son was not mentioned in his probate records. This suggests distance between Paul Jr. of Boston and his out of wedlock son, consistent with the fact that he had left the community before his son was born, returned well after his birth, then left permantly shortly thereafter.
