Dime H. Wheelock, taught school for 1 year in Hamlet & married. She went to training school in Cherry Creek. Dime & Ed owned the Red & White grocery store at Hamlet, NY. Ed was the Postmaster, upon his death March 11, 1931, Dime became the acting Postmaster (3/12 1931), becoming the official Postmaster on April 22, 1931 & remained in that capacity until March 10, 1947, when she sold her store to Fred J, Ruttenbur. She was the only woman Postmaster for the Hamlet Post Office in its 104 year existence. The Post Office at Hamlet closed Dec. 31, 1954.

Note on the Hamlet Post Office: From "The Early Post Offices of Chautauqua County, N. Y".; C. Malcolm Nichols; Jamestown, NY 1960. A Post Office was established November 19, 1850 at Omar, NY and was called the Hamlet Post Office. The Village of Omar eventually adopted the name of the post office & became Hamlet. The Hamlet Post Office was discontinued December 31, 1954. The Post Office at Hamlet was one of the first in the country to operate its own rural free delivery service. Hamlet was one of a limited number of communities selected by Congress in 1898 for the RFD experiment, which eventually resulted in a system of nation wide postal service.

The "Red and White Grocery Store" was located in Hamlet, on the southeast corner of South Hill Road and Rt. 83.
