In 1833, Arthur moved with his parents from Royalton to Newbury, VT, where he was reared and educated. He remained there until 1853, when he moved to Milwaukee, WI where his uncle, J. S. Buck, and maternal grandmother, Polly Buck, lived.
On 19 Apr 1861, Arthur Wheelock enlisted in the Milwaukee Light Guards, which later became Company A, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He served in this unit for three months, after which he enlisted as a private in the Seventh Wisconsin Light Artillery. He served as a recruiter, and in Sep 1861 was promoted to second lieutenant. On 21 Aug 1864 he was captured in Memphis, TN, and taken to Cahaba, Alabama. After two months of captivity, he was exchanged, and again entered active duty. On 18 Apr 1865, he was made Captain of the Seventh Battery; and on 20 July 1865, at the age of 33, he was mustered out of service, in Milwaukee.
At the close of the war, Arthur Buck Wheelock built railroads in the west for two years (1866 - Feb 1868); after which, he moved to the Dakota Territory. THere He homesteaded land in Lincoln County, where the town of Hudson, SD is now located. Arthur Wheelock, who donated the land for the town site, named it Eden; but because the place was often confused with nearby Egan, the name changed to Hudson.
For twenty years Arthur Wheelock farmed his land in Hudson. Deeply interested in matters affecting the development of the commonwealth, he service as a representative to the territorial legislature (1870 to 1872), and was a county commissioner for two years.
In 1888 he moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where he served as the chief of police, and later as a city justice.

According to Walter T. Wheelock, "The Wheelock Family in America, 1637-1969", Josiah died young. "Wheelock Genealogy", by Carlyle Wheelock and Winifred Gonseth, 1955, does not identify children born to this family, nor does it identify a death date for Josiah.
