John Andrews Wheelock was engaged in the marcantile business in China, where he died. (Src:"American Series of Popular Biographies, Massachusetts Edition, containing Biographical Sketches of Representative Citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts", Boston, Graves & Steinbarger Publishers, 1901, pg 558, online at books.google.com, Apr 2012.)
John Andrews Wheelock arrived in 1853 to work for Fogg & Co. He was still with Fogg & Co. at the beginning of 1861, according to the China Directory for that year. He set up as an auctioneer and general commission agent in April 1861; incorporated in September; and as of December was located in the rear of Russell & Co., off Mission Road. Wheelock formed a partnership with his younger brother, Thomas Reed Wheelock, circa 1863, and died at Shanghai in March 1865.
