Augustus J. Wheelock

Birth: 28 Jan 1847, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY

Burial: Butte, Montana

Father: John Homer Wheelock
Mother: Sarah Lucina Houghton

Notes:

In the 1865 New York census, Augustus was 18 years old, living in Dayton, New York, listed in the census as a twin of Augusta. In the 1870 Census Augustus was a master miller living again in Dayton. A notice in the 10 Dec 1874 edition of the Jamestown Daily Journal says: "Augustus Wheelock, son of Homer Wheelock, of Fredonia, who has been reported dead, has returned after a six year's sojourn in Texas, in good health."1

The order granting administration for the estate of Homer Wheelock, dated 11 Apr 1887, lists amongst the heirs, Augustus J. Wheelock, of Decatur, Illinois.2

On 3 Apr 1888, the heirs of Homer Wheelock sold property in Dunkirk to Charles Waters. Amongst the heirs were Augustus J. Wheelock and his wife Libbie of Peoria, Illinois who appeared in person on 14 Aug 1888 to sign the deed.3 On 23 Mar 1891, the heirs of Homer sold another property in Dunkirk to Jacob Van de Velde. Augustus J. Wheelock and Libbie his wife, of Peoria, signed the deed on 6 Apr 1891.4

In 1892, he was again a resident of Peoria, Illinois, when he signed the probate documents of his uncle, Harmon Wheelock.5

Later, he moved to Butte, Montana, where he is buried.6

Research Notes:

His birthday is given as 29 Dec 1848 by Persis (Park) Ivett, but this conflicts with the birth date of his brother Zenas, 14 Apr 1849, South Dayton, New York. Since the 1865 New York census identifies him as the twin of Augusta, his birth date here is presumbed to be identical to her birth date, which is given in Forest Hill Cemetery records as 28 Jan 1847, Hamburg, consistent with the 1900 census.

The record of Rebecca's baptism was found at the village of Eccles, which is just west of Banham, Norfolk, England, where the baptismal record of Rebecca's sister, Mary, was found. It reads as follows: "Rebeckah Wheelocke filia Radolphus Wheelocke & Rebeckah Uxoris eius baptisatus Vicesimo quarto [24th] Aug: 1634"

The Roxbury Vital Records indicate that Rebecca died in childbirth, though no such child is shown in the VRs. The date of death is given as 28 Nov 1667; the date of burial 24 Nov 1667 [sic].
