Notes:

Lydia Mitchell is mentioned in the 1841 settlement of estate for Seth Wheelock, of Burrillville, RI.¹

She is enumerated in the 1850 census (Lydia Michel at Ancestry.com), age 51, living in Burrillville, RI, in the household of John Mathewson. In 1860, 1865 (RI state), and 1870 census records she is again living in Burrillville with John Mathewson. She was born about 1799, per census records. The 1865 RI census identifies her birth place as Glocester, RI. By 1880, John Mathewson had died, and Lydia Mitchel was living in the household of Elisha Mathewson.

She is not found in any further census records.

Elisha Mathewson administered her estate. The case was opened 24 Feb 1883.² Inventory was filed 2 Apr 1883, and disposition of the final estate was submitted to the probate court on 4 Feb 1884. The estate gave $500 to Jeremiah Wheelock and $500 to Calvin Wheelock. No other heirs are mentioned.³

She is buried in the John Mathewson Lot (BU-24) in Burrillville, RI.

Research Notes

On 2 November 1857, Lydia Mitchell, age 58, of Burrillville wrote a letter in support of a pension application for Anna Mitchell, widow of Darius Mitchell. In the letter, she identifies herself as the daughter of Darius Mitchell, of Burrillville, formerly Glocester, Rhode Island. John Mathewson also wrote letters for the application.⁴ This aligns nicely with what is already known about Lydia - she was born 1799 in Glocester, and that she lived with John Mathewson from 1850 (or earlier) to 1880.

The Mitchell and Wheelock families were connected in other ways. Seth's son, Dana, was given guardianship of Calvary Mitchell's children in 1834. Calvary is Lydia's nephew - the son of Steven Mitchell (of Glocester), grandson of Darius Mitchell (also of Glocester). See Dana's notes for details.

Also, in 1820, Seth Wheelock is listed on the same page in the census as Anna Mitchell and Calvary Mitchell, in Burrillville.

This paints a convincing picture that the Lydia Mitchell with whom Seth fathered two children is the same Lydia Mitchell that lived with John Mathewson and was the daughter of Darius Mitchell.
