Notes:

Thompson B. Wheelock graduated from West Point in 1822, when he was promoted to Bvt. Second Lieutenant, 4th Artillery on July 1 1822. He served in the artillery at various locations including Ft. Nelson and Ft. Monroe in Virginia, Ft. Washington in Maryland, Westpoint, New York, Savannah, Georgia, and Ft. Moultrie in South Carolina. In 1829 he resigned and became President of Woodward College in Ohio, 1830-1833. He was reappointed as a 1st Lieutenant of Dragoons in 1833 and was involved with the Seminole War of 1836. Illness overcame him, and he died on 15 June 1836, at the age of 35. Ft. Wheelock in Marion County, Florida is named after him.¹

An obituary posted on Lieutenant Thompson Baxter Wheelock's Find A Grave memorial (number 3965535) states that he left a wife and two children when he died. (Citation not given.) See notes for his wife for discussion of his children.

Research Notes:

Though no direct evidence has yet been found, it is presumed that Thompson Baxter Wheelock was the son of Abel Wheelock and Catherine Baxter for the following reasons:

1. There is precedent for Abel and Catherine using the middle name Baxter with their children - Joseph Baxter Wheelock, who died shortly after Thompson was born.
2. Thompson was a man of the military, following in the footsteps of his presumed father, Abel. Both were officers in the Dragoons.
3. Margaret was born in New York, and lived there for most of her life. The 31 Dec 1836 marriage announcement in the Boston Columbian Centinel for her marriage to James Morrogh, who was also a New York resident, suggests that Margaret had family in Boston - her in-laws, the siblings of Thompson Baxter Wheelock.
4. His date of birth fits into the birth sequence for his presumed mother, Catherine Baxter - though it is, admittedly, a tight fit.
5. Family records support the assertion. The records of Alice (Easton) Pray, great-niece of Thompson Baxter Wheelock, identify Thompson as a son of Abel and Catherine.
