Caroline Virginia Wheelock

Birth: about 1832

Father: Waitstill Dickinson Wheelock
Mother: Nancy Waters

Spouse: William R. Bugg
Marriage: 16 Oct 1851, Perry Co, AL

Notes:

While not certain, the marriage location of Caroline (in Perry Co, AL, where her sister and mother lived) suggests that she is related to, and is possibly the sister of Louise A. (Wheelock) Graham, who also lived in Perry Co, AL (in Marion).

Caroline likely died before 8 Feb 1853, when William Bugg married Nancy A. James in Autauga Co, AL.1

Cyrus J. Wheelock

Birth: Apr 1850

Death: 7 Jan 1906, Newburgh, Orange Co, NY

Father: Lewis Wheelock
Mother: Eliza Palmer

Spouse: Mariette A. Allen
Marriage: 1 Sep 1881, Buffalo, NY

  1. Lucy E. Wheelock, born 7 Jan 1889

Notes:

In 1870 Cyrus J. Wheelock was living with his family in Concord, Erie County, New York. In 1880 the family, Cyrus J. included, was living in Colden.

Cyrus married Mariette A. Allen in Buffalo, 1 Sep 1881. He appears in the Buffalo City directory starting in 1882, first as a laborer, then a clerk. In 1884, his fathers probate records state that he was a resident of Buffalo.1 In 1890 he was engaged in real estate, living at 286 Rhode Island St. in Buffalo. By 1893 the family had moved to 421 Norwood St, where he remained until 1905, when he last appeared in the Buffalo City Directory. In 1907, his wife, Mary Etta Wheelock, was a widow, still living at 421 Norwood Ave in Buffalo.

Per death notice in The Buffalo News, Cyrus J. Wheelock died in Newburgh, New York, 7 Jan 1906, aged 55 years, funeral to be held at the family residence, 421 Norwood Ave.2

The Buffalo newspapers are filled with multiple stories that claim Cyrus J. Wheelock led a double life. He had two families - one with his legal wife, Marietta (Allen) Wheelock, and one with Fannie Johnson, who lived near the Wheelock family in Buffalo. Cyrus travelled frequently for his real estate business, including long trips to Clevland, Ohio, where he had real estate dealings. Per newspaper articles, he bought lodging for Fanny in Cleveland, where their first child was born. When the Cleveland deal was completed, he then bought lodging for Fanny in New York City, where a second child was born. Eventually Fanny became exasperated by his broken promises to divorce his wife and marry her, with several confrontations and altercations ensuing in Buffalo.3

Her husband apparently abondoned her, and remarried by the time he filled out his World War I draft registration card (1917-1918). At the time, he was living in Chicago, married to Mrs. Fleeta Gilbert.2

In 1920, Melinda G. Gilbert of Worcester filed a petition against her husband for desertion.3

Obadiah, age 78, is listed in the NY 1840 Pensioners List, in Floyd, Oneida Co, NY.2
