This is probably the William R. Wheelock from Clinton, MA that enlisted at age 39 on 12 July 1861 into the 15th Regiment, Company C, as a sargeant. He became 1st Lt. 10 Oct 1862, and Captain 5 July 1863. He was mustered out 29 July 1864.
The Boylston marriage record for Caroline and William indicates that William was from Brighton, Caroline of Boylston. The Massachusetts Archives record the marriage in Boylston (vol 7, pg 114), and indicate that Caroline's parents were James and Betsey. (This may be the James Brewer and Betsey Moore that were married in Boylston in 1805.) William's parents are listed as "unknown".
A William Wheelock, age 27, coachman, is enumerated in the 1850 Census, living in Waltham, a boarder in the household of George W. Lyman. W R Wheelock, age 28, is enumerated in the 1850 Census living with C A Wheelock, age 28 in Precinct 7, Worcester, MA. Also in the household is N E, age 6, A S, age 4, and W H, age 2.
William R. Wheelock is enumerated in the 1860 Census living in Grafton, MA, age 40, with his wife, Caroline E. Wheelock, age 38, and children Novella E. Wheelock, age 15, Abby S. Wheelock, age 14, William H. Wheelock, age 12, Frank W. Wheelock, age 7, and Carrie L. Wheelock, age 7 months. The head of the household is L S Wheelock, age 45, and Lucy P. Wheelock, age 37. (Probably Leonard Sibley Wheelock, and his wife, Lucy Pollard Wheelock.)
William Wheelock is enumerated in the 1870 Census in Christ Church, Charleston, South Caroline, age 48, planter, born in Masachusetts, with his wife, Caroline, age 48, and his children, Frank, age 17, and Carrie, age 10, all born in Massachusetts.
William and Caroline are enumerated again in Christ Church in the 1880 Census, both age 57, with their son, Frank H. Wheelock, age 28, his wife Edith, age 27, along with William Bixby (who served in the Mass 15th Regiment with William during the Civil War), age 38, his wife, Abby S, age 34 (William's daughter), and their child, Hubbar(?)
