Henry J. Clarke, in "Capt. Ralph Wheelock of Sturbridge, His Ancestry and Some of His Descendants", Quinabang Historical Society Leaflets, Vol 1, No. 15, 29 June 1903, says the following about James: "James, (b. 1773) met with an accident on June 10, 1794; while shooting a hawk his gun burst, and tore off part of his hand; he erected a stone on the spot where he stood and this memorial stands on land owned by George W. Wells; James died in South America."
The Boston Columbian Centinel, 16 Sep 1820 edition, has a death notice for James Wheelock, "formerly of Southbridge, d. in Savannah, aged 47."
