De Forest A. Wheelock has a comprehensive write-up in Jordan's "History of the Allegheny Valley", a summary of which is included here. De Forest Wheelock studied at the Teachers Normal Department of Chamberlain Institute, Randolph, New York, from which he graduated in 1877. He was a civil engineer and a teacher, served as the official surveyor of Warren county, and was the city engineer of Warren. He held various positions of appointment by the governor of Pennsylvania, and was appointed by the courts to relocate the dividing lines between several counties. He enlisted in Company I of the 16th Regiment of the National Guard of PA, rising to the rank of captain. He served with distinction during the Spanish American war, during which he attained the rank of Major. (Src: "Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley, Pennsylvania", by John W. Jordan, LL.D., Vol I, 1913, Lewis Historical Publishing Company, NY, Pages 400-404, online at books.google.com, Jan 2010.)

Russell's headstone records age 52 at time of death. The Grafton VRs record his age at death 52 yrs, 5 months, 19 days. He died of "Inflammation of bowels." Russell was a member of the local militia unit by the name of "The Granadier Company" in 1833, under the command of Benjamin Aldrich. (Source: "History of Grafton", by Pierce)
Salmon is referred to as "Solomon" in DAR records.
Though no proof is yet found, Salmon may be the son of Abner Wheelock and Mary Brown of Leominster, MA. The clues are as follows:
1) Salmon was born in the right time frame, circa 1774.
2) The filing of marriage intention in Leominster suggests that he may have lived there. (Leominster Vital Records Intention Filed 23 Feb 1794.)
3) He lived in Rockingham, VT, and joined the church there on the same date (3 Oct 1795) as did Abner Wheelock and Jonathan Wheelock, who may also be children of Abner Wheelock and Mary Brown.
Another possibility is that he is the Samuel Wheelock, son of Jonathan Wheelock and Thankful Haskell baptized in Lancaster, 5 Apr 1772. The dates match, and the two families share similar names.
