Notes:

There is no birth record for Henry P. Wheelock, but in all likelihood he was a son of Naomi (Fairbanks) Wheelock, born out of wedlock.

The evidence is as follows:

His 1894 New Hampshire marriage record to Rosina Nelson notes that he was born 1823 in Leominster, MA, and that his parents were Naomi and John Wheelock. The identity of John Wheelock is unknown; it's likely that he didn't exist. But there is only one Naomi Wheelock in Leominster at the time, namely Naomi (Fairbanks) Wheelock, widow of David Wheelock.

Henry adopted George Cawthorne, son of his half-sister, Sophia Wheelock and her husband, David Cawthorne, probably between 1854, when Sophia passed away, and 1860, when George is listed in the census living with Henry P. Wheelock, and his wife Lucy in Fitchburg, MA. Henry's half-sister Sophia was a daughter of Naomi and David Wheelock.

Henry's obituary indicates that he was born 26 Dec 1823 in Leominister, MA. Naomi's husband David had died in 1822, and could not have been the father. Naomi was known to live in Leominster on 24 Sep 1822, when she signed a document contained in her husbands probate file (Worc Probate Case 63646), and identified her residence as Leominster. Naomi was in Leominster in 1830, when she is enumerated in the census there, living with two young boys between the ages of 5 and 9. One of those would have been George Fairbank Wheelock, her eleventh and last child with David Wheelock. None of the other recorded children with David (her husband) would accound for the second young boy. But he is of the right age to be Henry P. Wheelock, who would have been 7 at that time.

Naomi's administration of estate (Worcester County probate case 63769) lists her "legitimate" children, none of whom are Henry P. Wheelock. However the settlement of the estate includes payments out of the estate to Henry P. Wheelock. There is no near relative with that name, other than her out of wedlock child, Henry P. Wheelock.¹

His Pennsylvania death certificate identifies his parents as Martin R. Wheelock and Samantha Gates.

The death certificate gives a death date of 1922, whereas his headstone gives 1921. The former is taken to be correct, given the age on the certificate.

Rev. Orrin Kingsley Wheelock, burried in the Evangelical Cemetery, Rebersburg, Centre Co, PA is probably his son.
