Notes:

Polly was born probably in Villenova, where her parents were living at the time. She married Joseph within a year before the 1850 census was taken (1850 U.S. census, Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York), and after a brief residence in Dayton, lived in Villenova her entire life. She was a descendant of John Howland, who came to the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. Her line of descent is: Polly Almira Crandall; daughter of Polly Webb and Daniel Stanton Crandall; son of Henry Francis Crandall and Polly Denison; daughter of Bethiah Crandall and George Denison; son of Lucy Chesebough and Joseph Denison; son of Sarah Minor and George Denison; son of George Denison and Mercy Gorham; daughter of John Gorham and Desire Howland; daughter of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley.¹

Polly's Birth Date:

Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and His Descendants says Polly was born 5 Sep 1827.² Her gravestone says 1825. Family records, maintained by her grandson, Charles Shattuck, say 19 Sep 1826.

Of these dates, the 19 Sep 1826 is the only one that is consistent with the U.S. and New York census records from 1850 through 1880.³
