"A Pioneer History of Milwaukee", by James Buck, Vol 2, 1881, pages 69-71 (online at books.google.com) contains a biography of James H. Wheelock. It identifies him as a nephew of Col Jonathan Wheelock of Green Bay, WI, and a brother to Benjamin F. Wheelock, Ira Wheelock, Dunham Wheelock, and H H Wheelock; placing him firmly in the family of Haskell Wheelock and Lydia Dunham. The bio states that he came to Milwaukee in 1836, and was elected a constable in Milwaukee in 1838. His 'claim' was in the northwestern quarter of Section 9, Town 7, Range 19 Town of Pewaukee. He left Wisconsin in July 1838, for a life at sea as a whaler. Over time he was promoted and gained command of a ship belonging to merchants at Tahiti, Society Islands. He died there in April 1848, leaving a sizable fortune in his estate. There's no indication that he ever married or had children.
