Lois Tucker

Birth: 1831

Death: 7 May 1882

Burial: Union Cemetery, Buckton, St. Lawrence Co, NY

Father: Oliver Tucker
Mother: Nancy Newton

Spouse: Russell T. Wheelock
Marriage: after 23 Dec 1873

Notes:

Lois Tucker was probably born in Stockholm. She lived in Stockholm with her mother, Nancy (Newton) (Tucker) Schellinger, and her husband, William Schellinger. She later married Russell T. Wheelock, his second wife, with whom she probably had no children.

Research Notes:

The probate records of Lois Wheelock of Stockholm, filed in St. Lawrence County, dated 10 June 1882, appoint Russell T. Wheelock as executor, and name the following next of kin: Abigail Cushman of Mattoon, Illinois, Lucia A. Whitney, of Southington, Connecticut, Nancy A. Cook, of Hanover, New Hampshire, Lydia Hall, of Rockville, Connecticut, Olive Hardy, Martha Hardy, Lois A.(?) Hardy, and Celia Dyke all of Stockholm, New York. Thomas Spratt, Esq. was appointed guardian of minor Lois A.(?) Hardy.1

A St. Lawrence County deed, signed 2 July 1872, from Nancy A. Tucker et al to Lois Tucker, proves that Lois (Tucker) Wheelock and three of the women named "next of kin" in her probate papers were sisters. Specifically Nancy A. Tucker of Hanover, New Hampshire, Lucia A. Whitney of Southington, Connecticut, and Lydia Hall of Rockville, Connecticut sold several tracts of land in Stockholm to Lois Tucker for "the sum of one dollar and the promise of said Lois Tucker to support our Mother, [unreadable] Schellinger." One of the abutting parcels was owned by William Schellinger; this will become relevant in the following paragraphs.2

The grantee, Nancy A. Tucker of Hanover, New Hampshire married James M. Cook on 17 July 1872 in Hanover, thus the reference to her as Nancy A. Cook in the probate records. Her New Hampshire marriage record identifies her age as 46, birthplace as Stockholm, New York, and her parents as Oliver Tucker and Nancy Newton, both born in Barnard, Vermont. Per Vermont vital records, Oliver Tucker married Nancy Newton in Barnard, 14 Mar 1815.

Oliver Tucker was living in Barnard, Windsor County, Vermont per 1820 census. In 1830 he was living in Stockholm, St. Lawrence County. He does not appear in the 1840 census.

The reference to their mother in the deed as "[unreadable] Schellinger" is almost certainly the Nancy Schellinger with whom Lois Tucker lived in Stockholm between 1850 and 1870. Also in the household was Nancy Schellinger's husband, William Schellinger. Per census records, Nancy Schellinger was born in Vermont, circa 1787, closely matching the birth date of Nancy Newton, 5 July 1788 in Barnard.

Putting the pieces together, Oliver and Nancy (Newton) Tucker moved from Barnard to Stockholm before 1826, when Nancy A. Tucker was born there. Oliver probably died before 1840, when he no longer appears in the census records. His widow, Nancy Tucker, married William Schellinger sometime before 1850, when they are living together in Stockholm with Nancy's daughter, Lois Tucker. Nancy (Tucker) Schellinger is supposedly buried in Union Cemetery, in Buckton, St. Lawrence County, New York, the same cemeter that Lois Tucker is burried in - but no headstone photo is posted on her Find A Grave memorial, and the relationships shown on the memorial are wrong at the time of writing, 3 Jan 2021.3

--------------------------------

Abigail F. Tucker (who married Clark Cushman) was born 5 Apr 1817 in Vermont (Vermont VRs, Abigail F. Tucker Cushman), and is buried in Hartland Village, Windsor Co, Vermont (not far from Barnard). She was the Abigail Cushman mentioned in Lois Tucker's will. She is probably Lois Tucker's sister.

The Nancy A. Cook mentioned in Lois Tucker's will is Nancy A. Tucker, nurse, born Stockholm, New York, circa 1826, married James M. Cook 17 July 1872 in Hanover, New Hamsphire, later divorced. She was Lois Tucker's sister. The marriage record identifies her parents as Oliver Tucker, born Barnard, VT, and Nancy Newton Tucker, also born Barnard. This, along with the proof that Nancy A. Tucker and Lois Tucker are sisters (see below) proves that Lois' parents are Oliver Tucker and Nancy Newton.

Lydia Hall of Rockville Connecticut was Lydia Tucker, born circa 1823, Stockholm, New York, parents both born in Vermont, wife of Thomas Hall.4

In 1850, Lois Tucker, age 18, was living with William and Nancy Schellinger in Stockholm.

In 1860 Lois Tucker was living with William Schellinger, age 79, farmer, born Connecticut, and Nancy Schellinger, age 73, housewife, born in Vermont.

In 1870, Lois Tucker, age 35, born New York, was living in the household of Martha M. Tucker, age 46, born New York, and William Schellinger, age 89, born Connecticut, and Nancy Schellinger, 83, born Vermont. Lucinda Schellinger, 60, was also in the household.

On 27 Oct 1857, William Schellinger and his wife, Nancy, sold land in Stockholm to Martha M. Tucker, for $500.5

John T. Wheelock

Birth: 31 Aug 1821, Albany, NY

Death: 3 May 1882

Burial: Alden Evergreen Cemetery, Alden, Erie Co, NY

Father: John T. Wheelock
Mother: Euphemia Turnbull

Spouse: Mary H. Powers
Marriage:

Notes:

Mary W. and John J. Wheelock are enumerated in the 1850 Census living in Lancaster, Erie Co, NY, with no children.

They had adopted two children by 1855 - William and Ellen Wheelock, identified as adopted in the 1855 NY state census.

His headstone states that he was 69 years, 9 months, and 3 days old when he died on 3 May 1882. This implies a birth date of 30 July 1812. But the census records agree with the 1821 birth date.
