He was a railroad engineer. He lived for a time in Kansas, then returned to New York where he lived in Elmira for many years. He married Mrs. Frances E. (Batchelder) Hersey, widow of Edward Hersey, in Elmira, 18 Oct 1883. After her death in 1893 he moved to Buffalo, New York. He married second Adelaide M. Grimes in Batavia, New York, 3 December 1898, with whom he had one child. She died in 1903 after which Lamotte Ames obtained a position with the Panamanian government as a mechanical engineer. He died in Colon, Panama in 1910.

In 1850 he was living in the household of Leonard and Amanda King, age 13, in Stafford, Genesee County, New York.

Not found in 1855 New York census.

Not found in 1860 census.

In 1870 he was probably the Lamott Ames, age 31, born New York, railroad engineer, living in Wyandotte Ward 1, Wyandotte County, Kansas, no apparent spouse or children.

In 1875 he was living in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, an engineer, at 118 W Second.¹

In 1880 he was living in Elmira, boarding at 115 Columbia Street, single, age 41, born New York, raidroad engineer.

He was living in Elmira on 5 Jan 1882 when he sold property in Stafford, Genesee County, to Leonard W. Shulters, no spouse listed on the deed.²

On 18 Oct 1883 he married Mrs. Frances E. Hersey in Elmira.³

In 1884 he was living in Elmira, road forman, housed at 208 Columbia.⁴

Mrs. Fanny Hersey Ames, wife of Lamott Ames, died 11 Oct 1893 in Elmira. She was survived by two sons, George and Harry Hersey, both of Elmira. She was 57 years of age.⁵

Frances Hersey Ames is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, spouse of Edward W. Hersey who died 11 Feb 1872.⁶

Per 1865 New York state census, Edward W. Hersey, age 31, was born in Massachusetts, his wife, Fanny, age 28, was born in Maine. On 8 Sep 1859, Edward W. Hersey of Elmira, New York, age 27, born Brookline, Massachusetts, married in Lowell, Massachusetts, Frances E. Bachelder, of Lowell, age 22, born Litchfield, Maine.⁷

In 1894 Lamott Ames, a member of the Central Railway Club in Buffalo, New York, was appointed to a committee to investiage "Leaky Flues in Locomotives - Their causes and how to prevent them."⁸

He was still a member of the Central Railway Club in Buffalo in 1895, when he was a member of the nominating committee.⁹

Lamott Ames married Adelaide M. Grimes in Batavia, 3 Dec 1898.¹⁰

In 1900 he was probably the L. M. Ames living in Buffalo Ward 3, Erie County, New York, boarding at 77 Swan Street, born July 1837 in New York, listed as widowed [sic], no occupation listed.

In 1900, Adalaid Ames, born Feb 1880 in New York, was living in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, with her mother, Ellen Grimes, and a son, Charles Ames. She was listed as married.

An Adalaide M. Ames died in Batavia, 3 Sep 1903.¹¹

In 1919 Charles Grattan Ames, age 21, was gassed while serving overseas in World War I. Mortally wounded, he was sent back to the States, and soon died in Batavia. He was survived by his uncle, Frank Grimes, and aunt, Mrs. Ellan M. Peckham, and two other uncles, James and Joseph Grimes of Batavia. His parents were deceased.¹²

Lamotte Ames was alive on 6 Apr 1901 when he renounced his appointment as executor of the estate of Samuel Brown.¹³

He died in Colon, Panama, 18 July 1910, where he had obtained employment as an engineer with the Panamanian government.¹⁴
