Esek Wheelock

Birth: about 1765

Death: 20 Mar 1848, Eaton, PA

Father: Daniel Wheelock
Mother: Keziah Hunt

Spouse: Sophia Steere
Marriage:

  1. Daniel Wheelock
  2. Adin Wheelock, born 1797
  3. Hannah Wheelock, born 7 Jul 1800
  4. Mary Wheelock, born 1801
  5. Theron Wheelock, born 1804
  6. Elizabeth Wheelock, born 1810
  7. Alrados Wheelock
  8. Polly Wheelock
  9. Keziah Wheelock, born 1814
  10. Ziba Wheelock, born 23 Jul 1816
  11. Augustus Wheelock, born about 1818

Notes:

Esek Wheelock bought a farm near Teagues Creek, Putnam (now Tunkhannock), Luzerne County, PA on 29 Nov 1794, from Samuel Roberts.1

Regarding the children of Esek and Sophia:

There is an article written by Rev. Frear in the Wyoming Co Historical Society that identifies the children of Esek and Sophia as follows: Daniel, Adin, Hannah, Polly, Theron, Maria, Eliza, Alzada, Kezia, Ziba, and Augustus.

Daniel Wheelock appears in the 1820 and 1830 Census, in Luzerne Co, PA.

Adin and Hannah both married into the Frear family, and are documented in "The Freer Family, The Descendants of Hugo Freer", compiled by Ruth P. Heidgerd, published by The Huguenot Historical Society, New Paltz, NY, 1968. Sophia (Steere) Wheelock is enumerated in the 1850 census in the household of Adin Wheelock, providing further evidence that he is the son of Esek.

Theron Wheelock, age 20 to 30 is enumerated in the 1830 census in Eaton, PA, next to Adin Wheelock age 30 to 40, and Esek Wheelock, age 50 to 60.

Augustus Wheelock, born about 1818, is enumerated in the 1840 census, also in Eaton. Besides proximity in the 1840 census, further evidence that Augustus is the son of Esek is found in the 1880 census, in which Frank, son of Augustus, is identified as the cousin of Charles Wheelock, son of Adin. Since the parentage of Adin is well established, it follows that Augustus was also a son of Esek.

Ziba Wheelock is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Delaware Co, Iowa, with his wife and daughter, whose obituary states that she was born in 1850 on a farm near Tunkhannock, PA.

Esek's obituary is published in the Wyoming County Patrol newspaper, 29 Mar 1848. It reads as follows:

Died - at his residence in Eaton on the 20th inst, Mr Esock Wheelock, aged 78[3] years. Mr Wheelock formerly from New England was one of the early settlers of this County, enduring the hardships incident to the times, having resided in the now County of Wyoming 54 years.

There is supposedly more information about this family in "Pennsylvania, A History", by George P. Donehoo, pg 115.

Relief Wheelock

Birth: Dec 1759

Death: 14 May 1839

Burial: Mount Washington Cemetery, Bethlehem, Grafton Co, NH

Father: John Wheelock
Mother: Mary Holman

Spouse: Willis Wilder
Marriage: 20 Dec 1778, Lancaster, Worcester Co, MA

  1. Willis Wilder, born 10 Mar 1779, Lancaster, Worcester Co, MA
  2. John Wilder, born 2 Sep 1780, Shrewsbury, Worcester Co, MA
  3. Polly Wilder, born 13 Feb 1783, Lancaster, Worcester Co, MA
  4. Nancy Wilder, born 9 Oct 1784, Lancaster, Worcester Co, MA
  5. Relief Wilder, born 3 Oct 1788, Heath, Franklin Co, MA
  6. Betsey Wilder, born 28 Feb 1791, Heath, Franklin Co, MA
  7. Clarinda Wilder, born 26 Oct 1792, Heath, Franklin Co, MA
  8. Vashty Wilder, bapt. 22 Jun 1794, Heath, Franklin Co, MA
  9. Joseph Wilder, born about 1800
  10. David Wilder, born 25 Jun 1802, Bethlehem, Grafton Co, NH

Notes:

She frequently spelled her name "Releaf," but the more conventional spelling "Relief" is used here. (Srcs: Worcester Deeds, 82:342, 88:309; Franklin Deeds 18:97, 20:355; Grafton County, NH, probate records for her husband.)

Relief and Willis were received into the First Church of Lancaster for their first full communion on 4 July 1784.1

They became members of the church in Heath on 7 Apr 1788.2

On 23 April 1839 Relief applied for a widow's pension for her husband's service in the Revolutionary War. She was in poor health at the time, and near the end of her life. On 3 May 1839 she prepared a will in which she left shares of the pension, should it be granted, to several of her children. She died 14 May 1839, and her pension was granted on 26(?) Aug 1839.3

In her will she left bequests to her daughter Relief Hughes, daughter Clarinda Woodbury, sons John Wilder, Willis Wilder, David Wilder, and to her "daughter in law Eliza Wilder widow or wife of my aforesaid son Joseph Wilder, who has long been absent & who I suppose is not living."4

Parents:

No birth record has been found to directly identify her parents, but she was almost certainly the daughter of John and Mary (Holman) Wheelock of Leominster, Lancaster, and Heath.

She and Willis were both "of Lancaster" when they married there on 20 December 1778. Though Relief was probably born in Leominster, her parents were known (from land and church records) to have moved to Lancaster by 1772, explaining the fact that they were married there instead of Leominster.

In a deed, dated 14 December 1776, she was witness to a sale by her father of two corn mills in Lancaster to Asahel Phelps.5 She signed her name "Releaf," using the same spelling she used in her husband's probate estate file, and in various Worcester County and Hampshire (now Franklin) County deeds. (Srcs: Worcester Deeds, 82:342, 88:309; Franklin Deeds 18:97, 20:355; Grafton County, NH, probate records for her husband.)

Furthermore, her husband, Willis Wilder, was the sibling of her brother's wife, Dorothy Wilder. Both families moved to Heath, and were admitted to the same church there within a few years of each other. Relief's parents, John Wheelock and Mary (Holman) Wheelock, also moved to Heath, and were admitted to the same church within a year of Willis and Relief (Wheelock) Wilder.

Note also that Relief named two children after her parents, John and Polly Wilder.
