Lemuel Wheelock was a prominent and influential citizen of Warwick during the period between 1820 and his death in 1842. According to the "History of Warwick" the town "revolved" around him.
He married Rhoda Chamberlain, the daughter of a wealthy man in Winchester. In 1820 he bought the store owned by Stephen Ball at the junction of Hastings Pond Rd and the Northfield Turnpike. Lemuel Wheelock had a penchant for making money, and aquired a great deal of property by making secured loans to the citizens of the town, and foreclosing. He was an astute business man, and invested his money in many profitable enterprises. He was described by many as pompous, vain, and uncharitable.
He was Lieutenant Colonel of the Militia Regiment, and served as a selectman from 1824 to 1830. On several occasions he was a representative to the legislature.
(Source: "Warwick, MA, Biography of a Town, 1763-1963", by Charles A. Morse, published by Dresser, Chapman & Grimes, Cambridge, MA, 1963.)
His headstone in the Warwick Cemetery reads as follows: "Lemuel Wheelock died Feb. 26, 1842, Aged 50 years." Buried next to him is his wife, Rhoda C. Wheelock, and two children, Maria Antoinette Wheelock and Rhoda Chamberlin Wheelock.
