Abner Wheelock was a merchant, proprietor of a hotel, a distiller, and carried on a large teaming business to and from Boston, before the advent of the railroad. He lived on the old turnpike about a mile from where Charlton depot now stands. (Src: "Genealogy of The Converse Family and Allied Families", by Charles Allen Converse, 1905, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~converse/index.html.) He is referred to in the deeds and probate records of Worcester County as Abner the 2nd, no doubt to distinguish from his uncle Abner Wheelock of Charlton.
His headstone in the old cemetery in the Northside section of Charlton reads as follows: "d. 18 May 1843, age 63 years, 8 months, wife Polly, d. 4 Sep 1874, age 92 years, 9 months". Adjacent is the headstone of Salem A. Wheelock, died 9 Jan 1813, at age 7 months; and Abner Wheelock, d. 14 Nov 1881, age 59 yrs, 5 months. Carlyle Wheelock and Winifred Gonseth confirm that these are the children of Abner in "Wheelock Genealogy", 1955. The other children are recorded in the Charlton VRs.
The marriage of Abner to Mary Converse is recorded in the Charlton Vital Records, but all children of Abner are listed in the Vital records as being born to Abner and Polly. Polly was a common nickname for Mary. Since the Charlton Vital Records show the birth of Polly Converse in 1781, to Daniel Converse and Mary Wheelock, it is highly likely that Polly's baptismal name was Mary, and that she was called Polly to avoid confusion with her mother.
The administration of Abner's estate can be found in the Worcester County Probate Records, case number 63598.

This birth also appears in the Leominster Vital Records, as follows: "Charles Albert, s. Charles and Elizabeth D., born in Lancaster."
"C. Albert Wheelock, while in a state of intoxication, fell from an extra-camp meeting train at Sterling, and was fatally injured." (Src: Annual Report: Including Returns of Railway Companies By Massachusetts Board of Railroad, Published 1872 by Wright and Potter, state printers.)
Charles mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 12 Jul 1861, age 26 years, 11 months and 27 days. His brother, William Everett Wheelock, also served in the 15th. He mustered out 28 July 1864, while absent sick, having fulfilled his term of service. His brother, George Franklin Wheelock, served in the 21st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
