Joseph R. Wheelock is enumerated in the 1870 Census living in Pomfret, NY, with his mother and siblings. His father had just died. In 1889-1892 he appears in the Somerville, MA, city directory, signal master for the railroad, living on 357 Beacon St. The Danvers City Directory shows a Joseph A. Wheelock living there, but his age, 34, is too young to be this Joseph. 1920 and 1930 Census records for Joseph R. Wheelock have not been found.

The evidence for Salem being the son of Abner and Polly is as follows: (1) Salem died young; Abner and Polly had another child, recorded in the Charlton Vital Records, named Salem Augustus who was born after the death of Salem A.; (2) the headstone is near that of Abner and Polly, and their other children; and (3) no other child is recorded in the VRs born to Abner and Polly in 1812.
