Avery moved to Syracuse, NY in 1945, where he founded "Wheelock Rides".

Avery's obituary, kindly supplied by his granddaughter, Krista (Spaulding) Leeder.

Avery H. Wheelock, 74; founded Wheelock Rides By Anne Roth Staff writer

For years, children have smiled with glee as they rode up and down and around on Avery H. Wheelock's merry-go-rounds. Teens have gasped with fear as they tipped upside down on his cyclone. Oldsters remember their youth as they pause high in the sky on his Ferris Wheel.

Since 1945, Mr. Wheelock brought excitement to carnivals, firemen's field days and festivals in the Syracuse area.

Mr. Wheelock died Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center after a long struggle with heart disease and cancer. He was 74 and formerly on Armstrong Road, Camillus.

Mr. Wheelock bought a used Ferris Wheel for less than $500. in 1945. His business grew to include merry-go-round, octopus, twister, flying bobs, kiddie train and spin-the-apple rides. The seasonal business-May through October-is within a 100 mile radius.

Hinsdale, Sodus and St. Johnsville fire departments, Assumption Church in Syracuse and United Church of Christ in Bayberry are among the many groups that book Wheelock Rides.

Mr. Wheelock's two sons, Avery D. and Andrew L., their wives, and grandchildren are all in the business. The younger ones run rides and games: two granddaughters run food stands. His daughter-in-law Alice does the bookkeeping and payroll. The sons and grandsons set up and tear down the rides.

Mr. Wheelock was always the boss, his daughter-in-law Alice said today.

"He didn't ask anybody to do anything he couldn't do himself. Everybody that worked for us and knew him respected him very much."

Today, the business is in two units. Avery D. and his family run one, Andrew and his family the other.

"We start out together the first couple of weeks in May and then divide up at the end of the month and come together for the New York State Fair," said Avery D. Wheelock.

Each unit has approximately 10 rides. During the peak season there are 30 employees.

Mr. Wheelock was born in Riverdale, MD., and was raised in Kirkland. He moved to Syracuse in 1945.

He began in the carnival business during the 1920's selling popcorn and peanuts with his father at carnivals. He was a 1935 graduate of Clinton High School.

Mr. Wheelock served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Wheelock moved to Plant City, Fla,. in 1980, where he ran a tourist resort business. He returned to the Syracuse area for the carnival season to run the business.

Mr. Wheelock was a member of Belle Isle Methodist Church and was an organizer of Cub Scout Pack 60 in Warners. He was a former commander of Knifetown Post 1540, American Legion, in Camillus. Mr. Wheelock was recognized by the post this year for his support of the post and its Boy's State program.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Rae Una Smith: two sons, Avery D. and Andrew L., both of Syracuse: two daughters, Carol Spaulding of Brooklyn, Conn.; and Linda Wheelock of Plant City, Fla,; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at B.L. Bush and Sons Funeral Home, Camillus, the Rev. Howard J. Rose officiating. Burial will be in Belle Isle Cemetery.
