John's death is recorded in the Heath Vital Records (MA) as follows: John, h. Mary, father of John (h. Dorothy), Sept. 6, 1792. There are several men from Lancaster with the name John Wheelock who fought in the Revolutionary War. This may be one of them.
Walter T. Wheelock in "The Wheelock Family in America, 1637-1969", agrees with the genealogy of John Wheelock, but gives the death date as 7 Feb 1778, noting that "another source" disagrees. The Heath Vital Record is clear about the death date of John, and lays the matter to rest.
